Help removing water pump

I'm replacing my broken water pump with another stock pump, but I can't get it off. I removed 5 bolts holding the pump on, and one nut on the driver side. Now there's a threaded shaft where the nut came off, going through a bracket that looks unrelated, then the water pump, then into the block. (Let me know if that makes sense, I'm trying my best.) Did I snap the bolt head off, or is this really a nut? In either case, where do I go from here?
