help with rebuild....

So I had my timing set go out and get alot of metal in the engine....

its in the garage torn down, replacing the valvetrain and timing set...

Question:

I am replacing the cam bearings, should I do the main and rod bearings aswell? Are they hard?
Also, should I replace the rod bolts or anything else?
What tends to go on the lower end first?

The engine ran great until the timing chain stretched.......

If the motor is coming out then yes replace ALL the bearings. Not too hard once the oil pan is off.

what are good bearings to get?
Federal Mogul?

I really dont know much about bearings......do I get the cheaper ones, or spend extra......I dont know.

Do you know about the rod bolts? I have heard the stock ones flex/stretch at high rpm's, dont know if thats true or not.

when you put those cam bearings in be real carefull and make dam sure you line up the holes properly

and yes, it would be kinda silly to not replace all of the bearings while you have the motor out

Well I pulled the rear main cap and here is what the bearing looked like:

I guess from the looks of that I need to inspect my crank aswell.....

I do I measure the bearing to figure out which size to buy?

take your crank and bearings to a machine shop and have them look at it. They will be able to tell you how much if any has to come of the crank and how much of an oversized bearing you will need.

You will likle need stock size bearings unless the crank needs to be turned. The only way to know for sure is to measure both the crank journals and the main bores. But if there has been no work done to either than a measurement shouldn't be needed. If the crank does need turining, most likely the bearing size can be based off of the journal measurement alone.

haha.....so.....
how do I measure the crank jounals and main bores?

I have a book for rebuilding the engine, but it doesn't have very good pics for how the measuring is done.....

I did borrow same calibrated tools for measuring though

If everything is unmodified, just get standard bearings and test-assemble it. For a basic rebuild, use Plastigage to check and verify clearances. If you are building a hi-po motor or just want to do it "right", you need specialized tools and the know how to use them.

To meaure the mains, you need a bore gauge and a set of bearings. After torquing down the caps, a bore gauge is used to measure the bore.

Then, you meausre the crank journal diameter using a caliper and a micrometer (there are varying ideas on how best to do this). The difference between the two measurements is the bearing clearance. You do rod bearings the same way.

Thanks man.
that makes it all clear now.

I already have the caliper-micrometer thing.....

just need a bore gauge now
