help reading my flow numbers please

I finally got my data sheet, it does not make sense to me. It's much different then what is posted in these forums....

Intake
300 62
400 77
500 86
600 85
700 85

Exhaust
300 50
400 57
500 60
600 63
700 64
800 65

300 CFM 25" correction
2.020 1.550

can anyone make heads or tails out of those numbers?

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

Nope. At first I thought they might have used a 10" pressure drop, but that doesn't even yield anything realistic.

Call whoever worked the heads and confirm that information... and at what pressure differential.

Intake
300 62% * 300cfm =186cfm
400 77% * 300cfm =231cfm
500 86% * 300cfm =258cfm
600 85% * 300cfm =255cfm
700 85% * 300cfm =255cfm

Exhaust
300 50% * 300cfm =150cfm
400 57% * 300cfm =171cfm
500 60% * 300cfm =180cfm
600 63% * 300cfm =189cfm
700 64% * 300cfm =192cfm
800 65% * 300cfm =195cfm

300 CFM 25" correction
2.020 1.550

can anyone make heads or tails out of those numbers?
I added what I think to be the conversion there, it appears that he left it as % of 300cfm.

Just a guess, but the numbers seem about right.

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

at the bottom of the page it states the following
300 CFM 25" correction
---------------------
Intake valve size 2.02
Exhaust valve size 1.550

now after this fax came in the machine shop called the porter(sublet)
written above the
intake valve size is 16.90 and next to it also PR2014
and below the Exhaust valve size 17.90 PR2021

The machine shop said these guys do things the very old way and I need to multiple numbers....best thing to do is call them, because he couldn't understand it

seems like they put sometime into the heads by the following prices, Im sure there is a markup also for sublet
port work $950
flow + cc work (time) $255

machine shop labor
138 clean heads
comp valve job 180
8 REV intake 135.20
8 REV exhaust 143.20

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

Chris may be right in his assumption. Only part is, how does the 25" correction play into it? Do those numbers need to be corrected to standard 28" (for comparisons sake)??

I agree.. call and see exactly what's up. Keep us informed.

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

I sure will mindgame, I really appreciate you guys taking the time. This engine/project has been an ongoing nightmare for over a year.

Mindgame or anyone else that can chime in please do. A little off thread topic...
How bad am i grabbing my ankles with block work here...I overheard the machinist telling someone on the phone his hr rate is 85.00

boil block,replace core plugs
change block to 4 bolt mains
line bore + hone mains
Rod Clearance block (383)
deck square
bore+hone w/ stress plate
wash for assembly
install cam bearings 1184.00
4 steel main caps 220.00

to me that seems very extremely overpriced??

The way you say that, keep us informed, should I be smiling? The only reason I say that is, my machine shop, has been bragging to me about this head porter, I do have his name, on the fax Larry Woodward, I did a quick google search wow this guy is into speed

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

I called the porter and was told those numbers are done in % (TQdrivenws6

mindgame I was told 28" of mercury.

Porter told me not to worry about flow numbers, or compare to others. I was told to bolt em on and I wont be upset.....time will tell

thanks guys

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

Good deal!

That 25" thing was really throwing me for a loop. So they're using a % of 300 and the numbers do correspond to 28"? See something different every day.

Larry Woodward... Woodward Racing.
I'm not a circle tracker but a good friend of mine is and I've heard about "Woodward Racing" more than a few times. Sounds like you got a good deal of experience behind your port work.

Best of luck.

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

Well a year later...........
I pushed and pushed to get my stuff back from the machine shop. They had 3800 cash for 2+ years. I had nothing to show for it. Last month I put my foot down. I was told 3 weeks and it became 5 weeks. I also said I wasnt putting another dollar into this project at this point. Well I was told yesterday he wants another 800.00 more. I fought like a SOB and today I was more or less told take my stuff and don't come back. I didn't pay him a dime more. What do you guys think of my heads

I want to sleep with them.

The bill i got says crane springs - I mentioned the GM847 cam gave him the crane number and I gave him 987 comp springs part #. (Whatever Lloyd was doing for awhile.) Right now I have no idea what springs or the install height. Need to do some research how to measure. I also got my block back no idea what the story is on that thing. On to the next machine shop I go. This time not a dollar will be given until job is done. Or pay as he goes. Everything will be in writing.

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

One more question for the gurus......
I have no idea what the CC's are for the cambers. I read how to perform the method of CC-ing the heads. My question is how does one CC the heads when the intake valve is above the surface? Just a tad -- enough that if using plexiglass it wont seal around the camber.

thanks guys

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

One more question for you guys

Is this lip just under where the valve cover gaskets go normal - on the intake side? It's been so long since I've seen my heads I can't remember. I know the machine shop had to mill the intake. I really wish I had all the numbers and what exactly was done.
http://67.80.163.6:8082/charts/lt1-heads/P1010082.JPG
It sure was cut and looks like a lot was taken off.
Someone want to educate me?

Thanks guys

Oh it feels so good to have my stuff back

Re: help reading my flow numbers please

That lip is normal. I am not expert, but what ever was taking off should have been on the side with the valves showing.

Look at this pic. You can kinda see the "lip"
