Angry Help, popping noise when I open my door is driving me nuts!

OK so ever since I brought my car it has always heard this annoying pop noise that I woud hear every time I would open the passenger side door. I figured what the heck you know, older Chevy's did do that sometime. I thought maybe greasing the door and had some ideas that I tried but nothing seemed to work. So I'm like what the crap you know. Well, one day I noticed one part on the door and on the front fender panel where the paint had rubbed off. Well, that is when I tried a little experiment. I open the door and watched that part and sure enough it did some thing like a small popping like motion.

Well, I'm not sure if anyone can notice it on the pic but you can see the small I guess you call an indent line that runs under the Z28 symbol is misaligned with the door. The rest of the car is fine it is just that front fender on the passenger side is misaligned. I was wondering does anyone know any possible way to fix this? It really bugs me and it serves no point to paint the car with a problem like that.

Thanks for the help,

Chris

I had a hard time understanding exactly where the problem is. But my 98 had, what I think is the same problem only on the drivers side. When ever I opened the drivers side door the end of the door would rub up against the front quarter panel. It turned out a bolt had come loose causing the quarter panel to be a little off. The bolt I am talking about can be seen by opening the door and with the door open look where your rear view mirror would be and through that gap you will see a bolt(or maybe not if it came all the way out). Here is a link showing what I mean.

Yeah, I think the bodies are pretty similar and by looking at the two cars I don't see why they would change that part. I added a link to my previous post to show exactly what I mean, good luck.

Thanks again man, I'm going to try it soon and see if that picks up the front quarter panel any.

I work in door systems.
What you have if what we refer to as "pop off".
Typically caused by door/latch to striker misalignment.
Look at the striker you should see a wear pattern.
Adjust the stiker or door in the opposite direction of the
wear pattern. Hope this helps.

my 95 Z/28 drivers door did the exact same thing. I "massaged" the fender forward about an 1/8 of an inch at the bottom and it never happended again.

people frequently use the fender mounting point to lift the car (jack, lift etc) which is wrong becasue they are mild steel and plastic and it can misalign the fender pushing it into the door gap. I would check there first and make sure that the mounting tab is perpendicular to the bottom of the fender. A pair of vice grips relocates this mounting point to its necessary spot with ease.
