help pls, lots of problems

ok was driving home from school at 45, but then noticed that when trying to get to the speed limit(50) it wouldnt do anything, just barley move around... and at the time the collant gauge said it was running at normal temp 200

now for about a week the exhaust has been making rattleing sounds. and i have got 2 egr codes and 1 esc(electronic system control i think) codes...

in the parking lot, it makes squeeling sounds coming from behind the motor, drivers side... would that be egr?

and after letting it sit for a few seconds the temp guage would raise...

so the things that i have been thinking are optispark, egr, thermostat, clogged cat, and i guess even cracked block could be a possiblilty.

oh, and it will not go above 3k rpm if it even gets there...

Re: help pls, lots of problems

Well i had a issuse with a clogged cat few years back, on the passenger side. It clogged up almost completely and the car ran like crap. It would get up to speed very slow, and my temp guage read higher than normal ( i have the 160 stat ) and the pass. side of the motor got real hot. This may be your problem, that would deffently set off your rear 02s. Just an idea.

Re: help pls, lots of problems

well thats good to hear... someone told me it could even be a cracked block because of a broken thermostat overheating and cracking it, and i just start freakin out...

but that was the worst scene ever... seeing the tow truck drive off with my car... and then seing him go 70 in a 45 with my car on the back...

thanks much for input...

It definately sounds like a plugged cat. (won't rev, no power, and rattling in the exhaust) Replace it and see it that solves a lot of your problems. After I blew a head gasket (thanks to a dead water pump) I had to replace both O2 sensors and the cat in my 94 Z. Also took the opprotunity to go through the motor and add a Hotcam. The motor would not rev past 4000 and had absolutely no power. After the cat replacement 6500 is no problem.
The squealing sound may be an exhaust leak due to the plugged cat - look for black carbon tracking around the flanges to the manifolds or headers. If the backpressure in the exhaust is too great, I could understand getting an EGR code. It might even be the EGR valve stuck open

Clogged cat. happened to me last month. Be warned though, soon you wont be able to go above 1,000rpm. It's also damn near impossible to cut off with a hacksaw. The metal is so thick where the cat meets the Y. It took me about an hour to cut off with a dremel and a hacksaw.

I'd say it's a clogged cat as well. The hissing sound at the back fo the motor would likely be EGR...that could be due tot he clogged cat though since you'd definitely have some extra pressure built up in the exhaust. So i would replace the CAT first and see what happens.

Re: help pls, lots of problems

the car got towed to the shop so its not under my control what happens to it, if they find it is the cat, they will probobly just replace it with a pipe which is good... but other than that i dunno what will happen...

o and if it means anything, at a constant idle the 02 sensors would range from 0 to 1, which i know is normal operation, but it was always going back and forth from lowest to highest, shouldnt it move around the point of 14.7 afr?

I dont know of any shops that will replace a cat with a pipe. Cats are a federal law.

Your O2 sensors reading is in mV...it's normal for them to jump around a bit (500-900mV range). I'm not sure what you mean by 0 or 1. "normal" readings will be around 900mV but the reading is going to be bouncing a lot and it won't be uncommon to see them go down to 500 or so occasionally.

Re: help pls, lots of problems

get one or two (depending on your car) off of ebay the're really cheap. Oh and use a sawzall to cut it off the pipe then have a muffler shop weld the ebay one on for like 40 bucks. Don't gut it though...it's preferance based but I don't like the smell of the exhaust w/o the cats...up to you though, good luck.

wow, everything you said is correct, they had to unhook the egr to release the pressure...

Re: help pls, lots of problems

im looking at the mac 3 inch off road pipe.... The exhaust system is stock right now, and i guess the cat is welded onto the ypipe.

so this off road pipe says it comes with a starter pipe to fit onto stock y pipes, does this mean that it will fit on them because it is smaller than 3 inches?

or is it another way to connect it to the y pipe. The reason i ask is because they would have to take it to an exhaust shop to get it done, because of the welding involved, but if it is possible to put this on without welding then it would be much cheaper.

heres the link

it lookes like both sides bolt on somehow...

thanks for anything....
