Angry Help please! Car wont start!!!

Guy can you help me out with this one? I was driving my 93 z28 when it cut off on me. I was slightly low on gas but not on E so I thought I might have ran out. After returning with the gas the car starts up and I drive a block 1/2 and it cuts off again. When I try to start it makes a burping sound through exhast but wont turn over. Opti? Fuel Pump? Please help its my only trans and I need to get to work!!!

Well, initially it could be your fuel pump. The fuel pumps on these cars are cooled by the fuel itself so if you run real low or down to empty itself, the fuel pump could burn out on you. You might want to check your fuel pressure to be sure.

Another way to check if it's your fuel pump is to turn the ignition to on (don't start the car) and listen to see if the fuel pump is whirring. It should hum for a few seconds and then cut out.

Does the starter turn over the motor when trying to start the car?

if it does turn over and you can hear you fuel pump whining a little it may be your ignition. try getting the car scanned for codes. maybe a code will come up for the opti or something.

I checked and the fuel pump comes on after I turn the key to the start possition. Is it safe to rule out the opti as the problem? I dont want to have to pay for putting in a fuel pump if I dont have to. Could it be the coil or other electrical $*^%?

It could be lots of things, but if the fuel pump is humming then that's more than likely NOT the cause. Since the car was driving and then shut itself off, it could be a coil or opti problem. Is the engine turning over when you try to start it, or is it 100% dead?

You need to test for fuel pressure, go to autozone you can borrow one with a deposit.

Also get a spark plug checker to see if your getting spark, it's only a couple of bucks.

Don't waste your money on buying parts and not knowing where the problem is, this includes the opti. Let us know what you find and we can help you from there.

I've seen to many people waste there money on all these parts before finding the right one. Just take your time.

Listening for the pump to run does not prove you have good pressure. Check it with a gauge as suggested to be sure.
