HELP!!!! My hatch won't latch.

My dad was driving my car the other day and he went to put something in the hatch and it wouldn't close when he tried to shut the hatch. I think the latch thingy is stuck in the open position. Does anyone know what the problem might be, cuz im stumped. Im not with the car right now so i dont know exactly whats happening but he says that when he pushes the button to release the hatch he just hears a very faint click and not the usual strong click and buzzing sound it usually makes. Thanks very much for all your help. No matter how hard he slams it it just wont catch

Maybe it just needs a good cleaning and then to be relubricated? Or the latch has come loose and moved and is not catching all the way????

There is also two adjustable stops, one on each side of the rear of the deck lid.

Yeah i know there's a key for it, and my dad says when he turns the key, that theres not much resistance to it, and that it doesnt feel like anything inside the mechanism is moving or releasing and such. Could the latching mechanism itself just taken a crap?
