Help with a Moser 12-bolt about bearings...
I posted this on the Drivetrain Forum, but it's been slow there to get answers, since I'll be taking my car to the shop tomorrow, and I'd like to buy the bearings myself...
I have a Moser 12-Bolt rear end. My driver's side bearing looks like they're shot. Are these bearings the same as the 10-Bolt rear-end?
Can I go to a parts store an order a set of bearings for a 1996 Camaro rear axle, without specifying it's a 12-bolt?
If somebody here has a cross reference numbers that I can use in the event that it's not the same, please, feel free to provide as much information as you can.
Another question, how do you guys order the gasket for the cover? Part numbers, brand, will also be helpful. This is not as important to me right now, as it is to know about the bearings.
Thx-Goose

How do you know they are shot?? Have ya taken the rear apart to check? If ya get it apart and remove the brgs and get the numbers ya can get them at a brg supply house along with the seals.
The brgs are NOT the same.Nothing from a 10 bolt will fit the 12 bolt.
Ya can make a gasket.

I put my car up on a lift, and let the wheels hang, and I turned them by hand, and I could hear some clunking noise coming out of the driver's side wheel -not from the differential, but from the left wheel to be exact- Also, when I'm driving it around, I can feel a thumping noise as if the tq arm was hitting the floorpan, or the exhaust hitting or banging against the floorpan. I took the car at first to a muffler shop, and had my exhaust examined, and re-adjusted, while doing so, I saw differential oil coming out of the left wheel.
I agree with you, I'm going to ultimately pull the bearings out, and buy them by the number on them. I just wanted to go prepared to the shop, and not get raped on the price of new bearings.

Don't sound like a brg. Sounds like a tooth off of a spider gear or axle gear.

Thanks for your responses. I'll post the results of our findings. In the meantime, I'm expecting the worst, and hoping for the best.

Re: Help with a Moser 12-bolt about bearings...
Well, the good news is that it turned out to be the bearings indeed. The bad news is that it's been a PITA to get those bearings locally. CarQuest got some out of Denver and I should be getting them by this afternoon. I called Moser, and they gave me a part number that was then cross-referenced to a Federal Mogul brand.
I take this anytime over having to deal with broken spider gears or worse. Thanks God.
And thank you guys for providing some help.
