no overheating issues. it's not exactly as it was before I took it in, but it's not overheating. before I took it in, it would hold steady at about a needle width/2mm below the 185* mark. since I got it back, it's been ranging during constant speed driving from that point to about one needle above the 185*. highest it has gotten is about 220, and then the fan kicked in and brought it back down below the 210* mark. other than the variance in the steady-state temp, it's about normal.

more data: the ses light went off while driving in to work this morning.
I'll look through those shop manual diagrams for the general troubleshooting path, but does anyone have experience with intermittent P0300 annunciations?

That does not surprise me. Summit has them for $309 and you will not get stuck with the sometimes crazy shipping charges of gmpartsdirect.com

There is a sticky at the top of this LT1 forum to diagnose your Opti. Be sure you step through that.

is it common for it to fail just after replacement, or for them to be faulty right off the bat?

It can go either way.

Usually they are fine when new(if they are AC Delco), but if it was me, given the symptoms the car is displaying, I'd make sure all is right with it. That is one of the things common to all the misfires you are getting(if they are on multiple cylinders like before).

There is no way for coolant to get past the gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold. Neither of them has a coolant passage at that location.

However, the bottom plate on the TB has passages for both coolant and idle air. It is possible for coolant to get into the idle air stream if the bottom plate is loose, or the gasket is damaged internally.
