Help me pick a cam...
Help me pick a cam...
Within the next year I am going to be tearing into my motor again and sending my LT4 heads off to Lloyd to be ported and I want to throw a bigger cam in while I am at it...
I have kinda, sorta, maybe been thinking of going solid roller, but my hang-up is having to constantly adjust the valves. How often does this need to be done with a solid roller? If for some reason I do go with solid roller, what is a good sized cam to go with? I want the car to be streetable, work with less than a 3000 stall (more like 2800 or so...), make good power NA but will someday be on the bottle so keep that in mind...Also, keep in mind that it will be going into a 2 ton boat of a car, so streetablity is a little different than an F-body.
If adjusting the valves is too much of a pain in my eyes, same rules apply for a typical hydrolic cam...
Useful info: Like I said, the heads will be ported by Lloyd most likely using the stock LT4 valves. I already have 1.6 rockers, so reusing those would be good. The motor is a 396 all forged 4-bolt set-up built for nitrous, right now, I think I am in the high side of the 10's for compression, so after porting I am not sure what I will have. Intake will also be ported to match the heads. I am running a 58mm TB and lucas 42lbers so fuel is good, for now...
So, have at it boys!

Re: Help me pick a cam...
If you want a low stall then you will not be looking at an agressive enough cam to warrant solid roller. I am also going to guess by your comments and the 2500 rating that the converter you have is a 12", ditch it and get a good 9.5" Edge, Yank or Vig are all good, a good 9.5" will drive and just all round be better than a 2500 12". I have a 2800 Edge, drivability is great, good enough to tow a small boat and serve daily drive duty even in snow and ice, a friend has a 3000 yes it is looser but still drives very well. The HOT cam is too small for that stroker something like the 306 mentioned would be better and still is hydraulic also has a wide duration split which is good for nitrous.

Well, that is the TC that I am going with, just not sure I wanna go too big on the stall....
I know the HOT cam is too small for a stroker, that iw hy I am changing it...
I thought that is what I wanted in a streetable cam...
I was an idiot....I was looking for something bigger than the 306...how does it compare to say the 847 or something like that...Most likely, it will be a custom grind from Lloyd, I just wanted to see what people thought around here....epsecially with the idea of a solid roller, but I guess most say nay on that?

Re: Help me pick a cam...
If you have a 396 and want the most out of it i would be sending your heads off to AI, but thats just my opinion. Then i would let Phil tell you what cam to run with your heads.
Re: Help me pick a cam...
There is no need what so ever with your setup to run a SR cam. Go with a HR for sure. As to exactly what cam, there's a lot of variables and I don't have time right now to even begin to go into all the variables. So you need to be a lot more specific about your setup, goals, and preferences to allow a more specific response. Cams are an exercise in compromise: low end v. mid-range v. high end; power v. longevity/durability/emissions, etc. What is most important to you? What are you willing to give up? Most self-selected cams are too big. Street cars with big V-8's are seldom operated above 4,500rpm. If you are building a car to optimze quarter mile times, the cam choice will be different than a street cam. If you want to roll race guys on the expressway, a different cam will be required. And so on.

Re: Help me pick a cam...
Your going to want more than just a set of ported LT1 heads. For a 396 stroker motor.....or at least i would. Then they can expand as your greedyness does.....AFR. When you drop the blower on. But then again if your not looking higher than 500hp then i'd say LT1 casting is fine.
Re: Help me pick a cam...
Yea as far as solid roller....I agree with Rich. IMO solid roller=race only..........there is just a lot more maitaince that goes along with it compared to a hydralic roller.

That is kinda what I was looking to hear...
As for the heads, I have the LT4 castings not LT1 so I am a baby step ahead in that repect...I am not going to ditch these heads for AFR because, well, I already have these and I am not made of money or I would go buy some 215 AFR's...
Also, my search function for whatever reason doesn't work, so can anyone tell me the specs on like the 847 cam?

Re: Help me pick a cam...
Nevermind, I found them....
847
Duration- I:234/ E:242
Lift- I:539/ E:558
Valve lash- zero/zero
Lobe seperation- 112
I guess with a set of 1.6's, that will push lift to around 59x? Does this sound like the type of duration that I might be looking for?
