to gut my cat...back when i had it on my stock exhuast,
i took a 2ft metal/iron rod and a hammer, then just place one side of the rod inside the cat and on the other side hit it with a hammer...
repeat procedure till all of the interior of the cat is...empty and not there...be carefull how you aim the rod inside the cat as not to go right through the shielding of it...

You will have to remove the Y pipe to get good access. Use a jack handle or large screwdriver and smash the ceramic catalyst into small pieces and it will just fall out.
While the Y pipe is off I would take it to a muffler shop and have them weld a piece of straight pipe through the hollowed out cat, it will sound 10 times better.
If they give you any grief about working on a catalytic converter (they shouldn't it is off the car) just tell them it's an art project or something

I nearly fell of my chair looking at the topic.
