Well, I have had my fair share of problems here of late and hopefully this will be the end of them for a while. Heres whats going on. The car will run fine for about 10 minutes and then it will start to run really rough, its undrivable. It cuts out and wont accelerate. Then, after the car cools down, it will run fine for 10 minutes and then start running rough again. I had the computer flashed for codes and its narrowed to the coil and the opti, Im leaning towards the opti. Im replacing the coil tomorrow but I need the car, its my daily driver, so do you think that I should go ahead and order the opti from Jason Chromer and start tearing down the front of the motor. Also, would it be really dumb of me to do all of this work without doing a cam at the same time? A cam is in the plans for the near future but I think I can scratch the money together to do it now. I just need to know what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

My 96 the opti is bad and it steel runs it just has a dead spot in it.I was told to make sure that the coil had the right amont of power running to it. With it cold and hot, And there should be a spark out of the coil aroud 1 to 2 inch. that is what slp told me.

 

What were the codes you got?

Always check the simple things like wires and connections, first. ICM and opti have both been known to have heat induced failures.

 

The codes were 36, 42, and 67. I have done a little research but they all lead to the coil and the opti. My AC is kinda messed up which is why it threw the 67 code. I have checked all connections once but the motor was HOT so I might need to do that again. Thanks shoebox.

Try borrowing a pair of known good oxygen sensors. Yours might be shot, causing the car to have fits when it enters closed loop. it shouldn't take 10 minutes to get to closed loop though. Are you sure you aren't exagerating the time it takes for the car to start running rough?

Yea, I thought about the O2's but they are only about 6 months old. Oh well, Im about to swap out the coils but Im planning for the worse.

 

Geez Bo I am sorry to hear about the troubles. I live in mortal fear of my 7 year old opti. And I believe the clutch is about shot..well tonight at Commerce might just be the end.

Hope it all works out. What cam are you thinking about?

 

Thanks Bart, I am thinking about the cc305 but I am still researching some of the XE cams or maybe even thinking about the cc306. Im going to stick with stock heads so I still have alot of looking around to do. I am in no hurry, especially since most of the money I have been saving for the cam is going for the opti now. Be sure to let me know how you do at the track tonight. A group of guys from down here in Tallahassee are going up to SDR tonight. Of course, the pick the weekend that my car is screwed up. Oh well, Im shopping around for a 700R4 transmission core and gonna tear it down and build me a race tranny in the next couple of weeks. That way, Ill have nothing to blame my bad track times on.
