Help me decide what to buy (~1,500)
Help me decide what to buy (~1,500)
Ok I have a 94Z A4 now but I'll be getting a 95-97 M6 sometime next month and I will start modding it. My dad is paying the balance that I need to get the newer Z so I have about 1500 for mods. Heres what I was thinkin
Mods
GmmG, Hooker, SLP 2otl, Loudmouth (700, 280, 300, 350)
MAC Jet Hot Middies, ORY (600)
Electronic cut out (100)
K&N FIPK (210)
4.10's (300)
160* stat (25)
Fan Control Switch (70)
LT4 Knock Modual (35)
Tranny Cooler (160)
CAGS! (60)
Fuel Pressure Regulator (?)
Meiser Electric Water Pump (200)
Car will have some miles on it (probably 50-80k) so I think a complete tune up would be in order.
Taylor Wires (60)
NGK Plugs (20)
New Fluids (100)
O2s (20)
Fuel/Tranny Filter (40)
And of course I would go for the free Mods.....
Soooo which ones should I pick to add up to 1500?

Plugs, wires, fluids, O2's (don't think you'll find them for 20, try 70-80 for the pair)....if I were you I'd get the Hooker, sounds the best for the money. Last time I looked a good electronic cutout is around 200. Get the moroso or some other CAI, Mac mids are good if the car is lowered and/or is going to be just a street car and nothing too radical. A friend of mine's got 4.10s in his car and wishes he had gone with 3.73s...that all depends on what your intentions are. He also sprays a 100 shot on his and it's not enough gear for him. Either way, I'd probably stick with the stock 3.42s (it's plenty for a mild bolton car) and build a good rearend later (9 inch or 12 bolt). 160, fan switch, and LT4KM are all good and fairly cheap. If you luck out and find a good 95 car you can just unplug the CAGS and have the benefit of the less-picky OBD1 computer.
After these things I'd start savin for a rearend. I'm right where you are with most of these mods, I'm savin for mac mids, cutout, and LT4KM. After that I plan on saving for a rearend with 3.73s. Working my way up to the motor from the back since the rear's are pieces of poop in these cars. Eventually retiring the 100K mile mule and building a low compression 383 and adding a blower setup later on down the line, hoping the stock clutch will last til then too. Good luck.
Re: Help me decide what to buy (~1,500)
fuel pressure reg won't help from what i've heard
on tpi's, yea, but lt1's, nah
also, go to brent frankers site (brent94z) on this site and he has a quick fix for !cags and it wont cost much if anything
you can make your own fan switch if you want (from what i've heard)
good idea on the tuneup (i'm finishing mine up right now
)
for headers, if you want some sweet middies, go to rksport.com
they are the same as the as&m (very good, comparable to long tube gains) but are a little cheaper
right now they are 450 and include everything needed (although i would advise buying felpro gaskets)
i hope to get mine soon, they were 480 shipped to my door and i live across the country from them
if you get gmmg (i got mine on a gp) then you wont need a cutout for other than sound differences
the gmmg has a marginal gain on their 600hp cars when compared to a cutout
basically, it'll flow just about as good as a cutout
hooker is a nice option too though from what i've heard
160 t/stat *imo* isn't needed
the amount of horses you pick up from it running cooler is marginal
the water pump could help but i've heard some people have had problems with the electrical ones leaking or something or other (only a few cases though)
4.10s might be alittle much for the a4 from what i've heard, but it'd be great for burnouts
i would suggest getting a nice torque converter, it'l get you about .2-.5 seconds in the quarter if you get traction
also, tires would be great if yours are worn out, get some good ones
good luck with whatever you choose

Re: Help me decide what to buy (~1,500)
Someone once told me you build a race car from the ground up. Although this isn't a racecar..... nonetheless I agree w/ most of the suggestions here.
Except:
-electric wp: wait untill your stocker goes out.
-4.10's: overkill for the a4 but good for the m6
-fuel pressure reg.

i saw 94 z a4 and went to answering the questions
yea, if you switch to m6, then no need for a tranny cooler
Re: Help me decide what to buy (~1,500)
My Opinion: (and I have reasons for each one)
1) K&N CAI ($150)
2) Tubular Sub Frame Connectors ($130+ welding)
3) MAC '94-'95 style Midlength headers, coated by Jet-Hot ($560 to your door)
4) Bullet ORP ($80)
5) Hooker Catback ($280)
6) MadZ28 tuning to get rid of the rear 02's and performance ($125)
7) 35mm Suspension Techniques front sway bar.($150)
With this combo (very close to $1500), you will have a good handling car that runs 102+ in the 1/4 mile.
