Help me build a smog (california) legal 383...
I just bought a 94 TA with a blown head gasket, so I am going to rebuild it. Since I have it out, why not do it right? So, I ask help me find a way to make it fast and still smog it (to be the wife's car)

383, fully ported heads, cc503 cam (biggest you can go in 383 in Ca), shorty headers, cats, cutout, etc will get you about 380-400rwhp or so. That'd be damn good for a smog legal Ca car and you could run some deep 12s or possibly 11.9 or so with slicks...
Remember, you can get away with a larger cam with a 383. If you had a 350, I woulda reccomended the hotcam possibly, not the cc503 because it'd be on the verge of passing smog. It'd pass in a 383 though..

would the gm-847 cam work for ya? i'm not sure what the specs are but if you leave all your emissions equipment on it might just work.
i have pace setter mids and they're smog legal...came with a CA card...nice to have but i dont need it.

Make the static compression high to make the DCR come out between 8.5-9x1.
Get a set of LE heads stage three and the LE2/3 cam or whatever he recommends for the smog thing. Used to live in LA and it's a bitch.
Get a set of mid length headers, get a GOOD tune and ya should be set."0" some high flow cats and an exhaust system.
Sounds simple,Huh. It ain't. Ya got to get pistons anyway for the .030 over so deck the block and get some reverse dome pistons to keep the quench around .040.
It will run pretty damn good with that combo and should go mid 11's with traction.

The gm847 WILL NOT even be close to passing smog in Ca. Also, the smog cam from Lloyd would be a great choice, BUT its not going to be any larger than the LE1 which is 22x/22x probably. So yea dont go anything higher than a 224/230 cam and it would be a good choice to get some midlength headers as long as they come with a 50 state legal carb number.

When ya talk to Loyd ask him if he can get a LE1 cam with more lift. That will help some with the small cam and the LE3 heads.
The larger the head the less cam for the same HP level. So if ya run a small cam for emissions the large heads will tend to make up for it,IF ya can get the lift and still pass inspection.
