and i noticed something was gurgling/growling (the car is off)

Whoa!! that sounds reminds me of boiling coolant.... do you have air trapped in your coolant lines?? Coolant leak? Thermostat stuck closed? when was the last time you bled the air out of your coolant lines?

When was the last time your checked your coolant level? overheating due to lack of coolant will give you those exact same problems you are describing on this post too.... when was the last time you changed your radiator Cap? mine did the gurgling sounds and it was the Radiator Cap leaking pressure into the Coolant overfill bottle...

Dude does it sound like boiling water?? Dont drive that car anymore till you made sure you have coolant in the car!! dont wanna warp those cylinder heads...

I had a similar problem with my 96, My car would get extremely hot with no power and actually after awhile would choke itself out, my problem actually ended up being that a piece of my cat broke and clogged it so exhaust could not get through, so no exhaust wanted to leave the engine, heated it up and gave me no power, I took the exhaust off the car and am running currently with no cats and the car has been fine evere since. Im not sayin thats it, but its worth lookin into.

another vote for the cat. Mine done this same exact thing. It eventually got so bad I couldnt even get the car to the shop. On the way I had to call and have it towed.

Mike

P.S. If you dont have enough fuel pressure that it will let you only get to 30 mph. I would think that it would feel like running out of gas when you press the gas. I know if your off on fuel pressure some you wouldnt notice but I would think if it was enough to only allow you to run 30 you would be able to tell that way.

When it was my cat. I could still floor it it just didnt have any power

an exhaust shop will weld it on.

shouldnt be more than 30 bucks for labor.

the cat however will be a bit pricey

if you werent in ca id tell you to gut it for free.

which actually could be a temp fix before your next emission test

i realize that it is january, but i noticed you are in cali.

if you are running the a/c, it can make a bubbling/gurgling noise when you turn the car off. the noise was coming from the right place.

your power problem does sound like a plugged cat tho.

Just had to replace my cat since it has started to rattle and taking off the heat shield only made it worse. Go to AutoZone or Advance Auto something like that and get a universal fit for 70 bucks with tax. It was put on my car for forty dollars at a muffler shop and it made my car quit sounding like a diesel whn it idles Be glad, it could have been a lot worse...

Vrmmm Vrmmm u guys ought to put ur money where ur mouth is and goto vegas cause for 95$ my car realed up that hill at 60 mph today i almost fell off the road tho i didnt take it quite right and traction w/ the worn tires isnt so great.

w/ the new cat its much louder then before and sounds much better

altho i still have a small stumble in low rpms in 4th gear... not enough power to pull at 13-1500 rpms i step into it and it doesnt do much... if it changes gears im already gone
