Help with issues: backfire, running lean, no power

I just installed an electric water pump and I had to pull the cam gear off to pull the water pump shaft and gear out. I left the crank gear on and popped the cam gear and chain back on (never turning the cam or crank). It was kind of difficult, but I did it. I then turned the crank to ensure the dots lined up. With the chain tight, turning the crank clockwise, the dots lined up perfectly. I put everything back together and now the car is running horribly.

1. It has problem starting up. I mean it fires up, but it takes some more cranking or a push of the pedal.

2. At low rpm, under a load (like taking off with a Spec Stage 3), it pops and backfires. It also has a tendency to die.

3. The wierdest thing is that my wideband is showing the car running extremely lean (like 16-18:1 a/f up from 13-14:1). I had to put a serious amount of fuel back into the program to get it to richen back up.

4. The car isn't necessarily missing, but it sounds funny and has no power.

I've got good fuel pressure and I'm going back out to check and make sure all plug wires are on right (I've already double-checked). Is it possible that I got the car out of time? What do you guys think?

I've had the opti on wrong before, so I've learned that lesson already. It fit all the way down, like it is supposed to. Also, when I had the opti on incorrectly before, the car didn't want to turn over very easily because it was so far out of time. I'm open to suggestions though and if I have to, I'll pull it back off and make sure.

If it is out of time, it can't be off by more than a tooth. The damn dots lined up though. Would being out of time cause the car to run extremely lean?
