Unhappy HELP!! How hard is ti to remove crank hub????!!

I'm using a 5-Ton, 3 jaw puller. I've got a 1/4" Drive 3-inch extension bar in the crank bolt hole to brace against. It started comming off pretty easy, but now I've got it about and 1 and 1/2 inches off and it getting VERY hard to turn withg a breaker bar! Isi supposed to be this tough (it's never been taken off before) or have a really fcked something up. I've get the puller on straight, so am I just being a puss?

What you need to do now is pull the puller off and stick a bolt inside the hub. Reattach the puller and continue.

The reason that it isn't getting any further is because the puller has "bottomed out" so-to-speak. Putting an additional bolt inside there gives it added leverage.

It will come right out.

uhhhh.....ok, but it appears that the extension i was origionally using is now stuck. I think it got pushed into the hole a little. Should I just use another extension and worry about getting it out after the hub is off?

Also...if worse comes to worse, can the crank hole be tapped and re-threaded??

It's hard to explain. Take a look at this picture.

http://www.norcalstreet.com/hub.gif

The top picture (albeit crude as it is) shows the problem you're encountering. The bolt has bottomed out on the crank. Despite how much you turn it it's got nothing to push on so the hub doesn't move.

On the bottom picture you noticed I put a spacer bolt inside (in red) which allows the puller bolt to push against.

It's hard to explain.

If the puller bolt is stuck get a mallet and wack it a few times on the side of the bolt. It's unlikely you damaged the thread so it's very strong metal. I have gotten them stuck a number of times and you just have to struggle to get them out.

OK....so I guess what I need to do it just us a 1/2 drive extension that stick out a little farther from the hub, with a socked that will fit over top the 1/4" Drive extension that' stuck in the hole?

Just stick any type of bolt in there that will fit. It doesn't even have to thread in. You just need something additional for the puller to push against.

Jpolz, you still working on this? I think I understand what your saying but unfortunately I haven't taken my hub off the car yet either. If anything here's a bump for you

That's guys! I got it off after about 2 hours a fuggin around. Turns out the hub was comming off a little crooked, so a few whacks with a rubber maller set it straight and it came right off.

Only problem is the extension I was using is stuck in the hole in the crank hub. i gotta see if I can press it out, or I'll be taking a trip to a junk yard.

That hub is a bear to get off. Isn't it? I did a search and founs a method that I used to successfully get the hub off. I removed the hub bolt and got an other same sized bolt, but about two to three inches longer. I inserted the new bolt all the way into the hub and snout. I kept it from bottoming out in the snout. I then applied a gear puller and pushed against the newly inserted bolt. The hub slowly backed off.

Also, I soaked the inside of the hub with PB Blaster penetrant over night. I'm not sure if it helped any but it sure didn't hurt any.

I think my problem was I started to take it off with a 5-Ton 3-Jaw puller, not the "bird foot" type where you thread the bolts into hub. I think that's what started it conning off crooked. Oh well, live and learn!

Yep....the bolt type puller is the way to go....you can crank on all four bolts to keep it coming off straight. It still took me a good 15min doing it that way.
