help: high pitched whine

Car has been running fine until this morning. Its an a4 93 z28 with a rebuilt 700r4 with less than 10k and a vigi 2800 stall converter. Car drives like normal, no noise, until you go WOT, then there is a high pitched metallic whitsle or whine. It seems to come and go, but about 80% or the time, you can hear it. It is rpm dependant and gets louder as the rpms climb. I checked the tranny fluid, still pink, smell good, level is good, no metal specks. Does anyone have an idea what to check for next. The oil is fine, coolant is fine. Temp stays normal, oil pressure great. When idleing, there is no ticking or knocking. Only noise is from a cat that needs to be replaced, but that is an intermitten rattling like marbles in a can. Anybody got any ideas?

where does the sound seem like it's coming from??? Front or back of the car?? Could be a few things...

It only happens at WOT though??? Not an RPM or MPH range?? As much info as possible please.

I think it is the rear end. I did a search for spun rods and it doesnt seem to be doing anything everyone else describes. It isnt doing the same thing it did last time when I had tranny problems (slipping, not going into OD). I took it for a test drive to check the oil pressure again and it didnt seem to pull as hard as normal. After a couple of laps around the freeway, I came home and parked to check the fluids again, and noticed smoke coming from the rear drivers side wheel well. It didnt smell like tranny, oil or anti freeze. Kinda reminded me of old diff fluid, just a lot stronger.

The sound seems to be coming right under the passenger compartment, but I normally can hear it when I reflects off of walls, like at an overpass or next to a retaining wall. I can nail the throttle at any speed and rpm and when I do, the noise comes.
