Well.. if you really want to do it.... it'll cost you a Min. of $200 in just measuring tools to set the gears up properly.. and even then it's a PROJECT!!...

I would NOT recommend that anyone do it who doesn't have extensive close-tolerence mechanic experience.. namely rebuilding Transmissions/engines/other axles...

Putting a ring and pionion in a car is alot of work. Even more on Gm housings. You will need a press and the tools to check play and the depth of the pionion. I been doing cars for along time. I rebuild engines, Transmissions, about every part of the car. I have the tools to rebuild rear ends (press $400-depth gauges $1000) and It still is a pain in the a$$. If your lucky. You will only have to take the pinion gear out once. But usually to get the correct depth and run, you will have it out about 4 or 5 times. And every time you take the pinion gear out to change the shim you need to press off the bearing and press it back on. If you never have done rears or havent done a few. I Do NOT recommend doing it. Pay someone. If it costs you 400.00 so be it. How much is it to replace the rear if it blows up in a week because the gear wasnt set properly. Usually when you blow the rear, it eats the bearings and carrier up as well.

Not to steal this thread or anything but I have a question. I had gears put in my car (for $150 proffesionally) and everything is setup right, but after I drove my car for a while, my pinion bearing come lose from the pinion (spinning when its supposed to be pressed). It ate the shim up and I took it back and he fixed it, but the bearing has come loose again!! There is nothing more annoying than a bad pinion bearing whining in your ear all the time. Should I just be able to replace the shim and press a new bearing on there and it should fix it?

a gear install is not the place to cut corners......spend the $$$ with someone who knows what he is doing....my 4.10 install was quoted on a job basis.....good thing, 9am-4pm......but the important thing is they are right....and at $200.00

If you lived up here I could get it done for you for like $125. You just have to know people I guess. But there are numerous places around me that will do them for a hell of a lot cheaper than $400.
