Question help fast! coolant resevoir suposse to leak?

i just had a water pump replaced in my 97 formula and now when it gets some temp to the coolant it starts leaking fairly bad. i've got it up on stands and everything is solid around the pump. the leak that i know of is the coolant overflow reservoir (black thing under/next to the battery). shouldnt this thing be permanently sealed or is it suppose to be vented?? it's one huge sealed unit so i cant tell exactly where the leak is occuring but i know it's in the top 1/3 of the container....i think around the area where the top radiator vent tube goes in the top of the reservoir because theres a good amount of battery sludge around it and i'm thinking that it has corroded it. so i guess my question is should that reservoir leak at all or should it be fully sealed (ie. i can invert it when theres fluid in it and still have none drain out)?

thanks much!

If your cooling system is overfilled, it will leak out of the cap on the overflow reservoir when the car comes up to temperature.

i just read some of the things that turned up in my searching and i think i'll start simple and go buy a new radiator cap. perhaps its worn out (car is 6.5 years old, 120K on the odometer) and blowing off at a lower than intended pressure. sound about right?

I forgot about the cap. I just had a friend that had that problem, and it turned out his cap was bad.
