Help failed smog in ca

I Went to pretest my car before going to test only station and failed. They said my no readings were to high. I read around 985 for the 15mph test and max was i believe 689 and the 25 mph test was around the same and the max was 706. The guy said i probably should get a new cat. well I got one and 160 bucks later plus 30 dollars for the pretest and it still wont pass. I have a new egr valve because it did the same thing two years ago and no help. I changed the oil cleaned my air filter and changed the fuel filter as well. Now I dont know what the hell to do. The guy said it is running to lean and maybe the egr solenoid is bad. I dont want to shell out a whole lot more money. I have a ported MAF k+n hi flow 52 mm throttle body and edelbrock shorties with a new hi flow cat and flowmaster cat back if that helps.

Someone on this board did a test comparing different MAF configurations and determined that porting the MAF caused the car to run lean, dangerously lean in some cases. Try installing a set of stock MAF ends and retest.

Good luck

I agree..... Swap the ported MAF ends with stock ones and make sure your EGR is working properly ( no exhaust gas recirculation blockage).

Hi NO content is due to high combustion chamber temps.... EGR not functioning or blocked EGR passages was my first thought (if everything else is working properly) but when I read ported MAF I began to suspect a lean condition.

good luck

Hey Thanks for the reply. I tried using stock ends two years ago and it didnt help. Had the same problem. The guy said the egr was stuck and screwed with it till it passed. But now i have a new egr and it wont pass. Plus i dont have any stock ends for the MAF.
Any other suggestions.

check your fuel pressure, if it is low, this could cause it to be lean.

Run it down to a 1/4 tank, add 2 or 3 bottles of Gasline antifreeze to dilute the gas with alchohol and then see what you get.

Good luck. I fail every month on HC's. It has become funny. I have pretty much tried everything. Basically I pay 14.00 a month to keep it on the road. They laugh when they see me coming.

One more note. High combustion chamber deposits will produce High NOx content. Anyway you can De-carbon your chambers? In California they sell that product (forgot the name) that I think its called Pass or no Pay.... grrrrrr I cant remember.

Anyway I used it as per instructions and it did work for me a long time ago. I think its a good cleaner (valves, pistons,,, etc) anyway whatever way it works, I was able to make a ford fiesta pass emissions. (Fiesta = POS) Try it.

Go to Home Depot and buy some denatured alcohol(alcohol with NO WATER MIXTURE). Run the car until its almost out of gas. Add the alcohol. Take it to the inspection station while the car is completely warmed up. The car should pass even if you dont have cats. Once you leave the station drive the car until its almost completely empty. Add a gallon of gas and drive it until its empty again. Then fill it up with gasoline. The reason is the alcohol will eat through your fuel lines if in for a long term.

Gas line antifreeze is methyl hydrate and won't attack the fuel lines.
Either way, alchohol or methyl hydrate. The idea here is to dilute your gas with a solvent that burns up more completely hence less unburned HC.

Cool

Now remember,if you do run out of gas,you will fry the fuel pump that is in the gas tank(overheat),and you will have a big expense. Then you might have other issues from this point on.Hope this helps.

Get rid of the power programmer. Reinstall the stock MAF and replace your O2s. JMHO
