HELP car won't run after cam install!
HELP car won't run after cam install!
Just got everything back together and tried to start here. Looks like all connections are made.
Car stutters at about 100 rpm and then dies. Got it to backfire once. Working on old v8 iron, this is what the car sounds like when the timing is way off, or when the cam is 180 deg out of phase. I don't understand how I could have done that. The pin went into the opti and I lined up the dots according to shoeboxes website.
Anyone have any ideas, and any tips to troubleshoot the problem?
thanks!

thanks for the suggestion, I tightened the rocker nuts down until I couldn't spin the pushrod anymore on install, rotated the crank until each one was tight. I will take a look at it.
By the way it is the LT4 hotcam kit with the gm 1.6 rockers adjustable valvetrain.

well I'm pretty sure I put the opti on right. Also my checked my wire connections and they are correct.
I didn't put any preload on the rockers, maybe they are not opening the valves? I think it should at least run though.

If your valves are too tight it may not run at all. What lifters are you running? Just go to 0 lash and go 1/4 to 1/2 turn past 0 lash. I am using comp R's, so I only went 1/4 turn past 0. 0 lash is where you can feel resistance on the pushrod while spinning it, not where it doesnt spin at all.

Is it possible to put the cam in 180 deg out of phase? I don't think it is since the opti pin is on the cam sprocket. So if you install the dots crank gear dot up, cam gear dot down, or crank gear dot up cam gear dot up, it shouldn't make any difference?
On distributor cars you could do it either way but your distributor would be 180 out of phase.

Its like on shoeboxes web site. Crank gear at 12 o clock, cam gear at 6 o clock, cam dowel at 3 o clock. Do you have a vented or non-vented opti? If you have the vented you have to line up the cam dowel hole on the opti with the #6 TDC slot with the timing in that position.

well pulled the opti and can see by a mark on the opti that the pin did not go in the slot. It was about 60 deg retarded. I just put the opti back on and going to fire it up for a couple of seconds to make sure I got it this time. Is there any sure fire way to make sure those line up?
If your dowel pin is the correct length, the opti can pretty much only go on the right way and sit completely flush on the motor. Just make sure you lined up the keyed slot with the #6 mark and that the opti is flush against the motor without forcing or pulling it on with bolts.
