HELP! Car dies on freeway

I was on my way home from work last night when BANG! the car backfires and dies ( big bang and cloud of smoke behind me) . I tried pushing the gas but the RPMs stayed on 0, so I put it in neutral and let it roll to the side of the freeway. I was going around 80 mph at 2500RPMs, thats when I think the problem happens. When I tried starting the car up again it started easily and ran fine if I kept it under 2000RPM in the last gear. If I drive it hard in the lower gears this doesnt seem to happen ( but I dont hold it at 2500-3000RPM for a long time). Any help will be appreciated, I need this car to get to work. Also there was no fluid leaks spotted. My car is an A4 so maybe the 4L60 trans. has something to do with it?

Yeah, The car has 133,000 miles on it and probably the orig opti, it also sometimes has hesitation off idle and misfires. Did your car start backfiring, than die? Would it start back up right away? I need this fixed ASAP, Need to get to work!

Ok! Just put down some major $$$ for a brand new opti w/ cap and rotor kit. I assembled the opti and installed it, but have the same problem, still! Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it? Coil it be the plug wires? I have new spark plugs, coil, opti, and cap & rotor. Any help would be greatly apprieciated, this is a daily driver and needs to be fixed ASAP.

check your underhood fuses, also replacing your O2 sensor might fix the problem.

bought a brand new set of o2s about 2 weeks ago. Someone told me it could be that the car is running too rich, I recently switched from 22s to 24s ( used set). My 22s were leaking and caused really hard starts, when I put in the 24s it starts right up all the time.

How did the plugs look? What's under the bumper forced air induction, is it some sort of city slicker way to say a blower? How are the sensors like the TPS the MAP and temp? When your injectors took a dump, what happened to the cats if you still have them? Did you check back pressure? Sorry, got too many questions to help you until you answer them.

The plugs looked average for how long they had been in. They were not fouled, I just chose to replace them. I have yet to check my catalytic converter for it has to be cut off since it is welded on. I'm probably going to cut it off and run straight pipes to the muffler. Right now I have all the everything on but the actual muffler itself, do you think having a free-flowing intake and exhaust has something to do with this. What is a good running temp for these things, my temp gauge is always around half way or a little over, is that bad? I heard that the MAP sensors are the same for most GM vehicles around this year, my dads silverado and my moms blazers MAP sensor looks the same as mine also, do you suggest I switch them out to see what happens, or are they set up for that car only? I'll probably check with an auto parts store to see if the part numbers match for the vehicle. Later today i'm picking up a new Ignition control module from oreilly's, when I dissassembled the coil rack today I noticed that the ICM was comming apart and the walls were cracked. There goes another 100 bucks , hope it fixes the problem!

PROBLEM FIXED! It was the ICM module. Why does a little $78 control module cause such trouble. I could not even rev my motor past 2500rpm without it shutting off! I hav'nt drove it real fast yet, but I think its good!
