help with a bad shop & opti question..

Got a bill back from a shop and it reads like this.
Water Pump Gasket 2.42
Distribtuor assembly 523.06
Distributor Cap & Rotor 242.43
Ignition coil 62.69
Distributor Connector 142.20
Dexcool 17.78

Hes telling me they paid 520 for half the opti... and it came without the cap and rotor which they had to buy(the cap and rotor charge).

End total was almost 1500.

I've called whole sale places and local parts houses and they don't even know of a place that sells just that half and some said they don't even sell just that part. Does anyone know anything about this?

Has anyone else dealt with bad shop? Anyone have any idea what i can do about this and getting my money back?

62.69 for a coil sounds very high

That's insane!!!! My opti cost $210 from GM! Best advice I can come up with is to talk to a lawyer. He might be able to get them on price gouging.

BTW What is a $142 distributor connector?

It is my opinion tht you got SCREWED.
The complete GM opti with cap can be had for around $250.00
The harness can be had for around $60.00
The coil can be had for $35.00

Normally shops will charge a customer double what they pay for parts. This is not at all unusual but charging $765.00 for a complete opti is outright criminal. I would definitely challenge them on this and demand the old one back.

I just paid $200.00 for the Acell opti from JCW. I am not even sure you can buy a new opti without the cap, maybe this is where you can question them.

I really dont think a lawyer will do ****. The lesson here is to demand part pricing up front.

Oh trust me i got the old parts back.. I have them right next to me. All this work was being done before i even knew what the price was or what was being done. So i had no clue otherwise i would have been spending alot less.

The Connector they were talking about is the sensor cord that plugs into the opti.

Do you really think a lawyer can't do anything about it? And another question. Does the shop have to get permission from the OWNER of the car before they do work, not a family member?

Where'd the other post go?
And did they cut the stub off of this opti also?
And yes those prices are way out of line.. and it appears that it isn't even a GM opti, but some remanufactured one? [since GM opti's do come with cap and rotor installed..

The laws are different from state to state, and it depends greatly who the family member is and weather or not you told them ahead of time that they would be authorizing the reapairs. If the family member is a wife, your screwed. If not, and you didn't tell them to contact this person, you probably have a leg to stand on. While a lawyer may not be necessary, they would let you know your rights a lot faster than you would be able to find them out.

The other one?? People went off about answering something else instead of my question so i got rid of it.

No they just switched the new cap with the one cut off (incase it did fail). As soon as i get paid I'm swaping cams along with the other cap.

I would start by posting the name and location of the shop, just in case others are in the same area.

Re: help with a bad shop & opti question..

I would amend the original post to this:

Got a bill back from a shop and it reads like this.
Water Pump Gasket 2.42
Distribtuor assembly 523.06
Distributor Cap & Rotor 242.43
Ignition coil 62.69
Distributor Connector 142.20
Dexcool 17.78
The look on 97BBlackZ's face when he got the bill. PRICELESS!

Sorry they got you like this Man. That is exactly why i do all of my work myself.

Re: help with a bad shop & opti question..

when i was looking for a new opti GM quoted me 700ish for a opti + cap and rotor but the fact that the shop didnt call u and ask u if u wanted oem or aftermarket being that expensive is some bs.

Re: help with a bad shop & opti question..

Basically what that shop did was charge you double the price you could have bought the parts for,and added parts you didnt need..your car was probably missing and stumbling right?? I doubt the coil, opti harness, and the opti itself were ALL bad. And the "cap and rotor" are part of the opti..its sold separately but i'm not sure why they charged you for one when you can get a brand new opti for around 300 that has the cap, rotor, optical sensor and housing together..doesn't make sense. And they charged and extra 500 for labor..for an opti and coil? Even an average shop should be able to do that in 4 hours..
