HELP!! 95 z with opti issue ???
Hi ....brand new here....I hope someone can help....I have a 95 z/28 LOVE IT.....it's my first Camaro....I have a issue....when I got the car (3 months ago) it ran like a beast....but it would break up like it was hitting a rev limited at 4500-4800....after new plugs,new wire,new coil.my buddy put it on a scanner and says the MSF is maxing out at 3k rpm....my other buddy is a service writer for GM and had a tech look at it and he said it was the opti....so...opti changed out and now...the car starts fine but it runs like it has two plug wires off...shutters at anything over idle...but pulls to 6k no prob...I only test drive for 10 min and put in back in the garage...don't know why it's running bad...put all GM parts in the opit is the red MSD from autozone.and it is in flush with the block....could it be installed wrong? Any help please?????? Thx

Yes it could be installed wrong. Make sure the pin is in the right slot on back of the opti. When you installed it, did it go on easy or did you force it down with the bolts?

My buddy did it...but he said it went in smooth on first try and everything lined up but on the back of the opti it has the three slots....could it be in the wrong one? Car ran smooth be4 and now runs horrible...if its in the wrong spot would it even run?amd which slot is right?

It would run, but not good. When I first bought my car, someone replaced the camshaft or something and the pin wasn't long enough to turn the opti. The car ran but had no power. It would backfire and shut off on me.
If you're unsure if its on right,I would take it off and check it. I always put mine on without bolting it down and then remove it just to make sure its lined up right.

Let the shop figure out what's wrong. Surprised they didn't notice it running bad themselves. Could have wires on wrong, so should check easy stuff first. One of mine burnt on the headers right away and acted this way, if it ran good for a little bit.

It's runs but runs like I said like its running on 4cyl. My buddy who did swore it was put in rite but he said he we will pull it apart tomorrow and check it all out...the car runs waaaay faster than stock so it might have a cam in it....my buddy's car runs 14.2 and we did a roll on race from 40-110 mph rite after I got the car with it breaking up at 4500 and it was no contest I pulled him like he was sitting still...my buddy did it for me....we are gonna check everything tomorrow...but he said he's 90% sure everything is lined up rite....and he numbered all the plug wires...so I guess we will see tomorrow....

He's not a expert in lt1...just a f-body guy in general he's restored many of 79-92's...and raced mid-America cars with small block Chevys but ever really worked on the Lt1s he is a great jack of all trades kinda guy.. But he did all his research online before pulling everything apart...but we both thought the could only be put in one way....ill talk to him and have him post on here excalty how he put it back together...I emailed him my login info so when you see a detailed description on the instal....it's him...

Well...he says everything is excalty like the pix for shoebox....so we will find out tonight when we trace the plug wires....I hope it's crossed wires!! Thx everyone.....Chet, thank you might be contacting you!.....but I hope not!!! !

UPDATE....had two plug wires on the opit crossed....car runs super smooth.but it still has a break up/back fire under wot at around 4800-52000 rpm...runs,starts,idles fine. and pulls fine when it's not under wot...the guy who put the scanner on it said (and I seen it) that the maf was maxing out at 3k rpm..is this even possible?
I thought the stock maf was good for Heavy modded cars...mine just has some mods(not really sure what as I bought it used sounds like head work /cam) but it runs way harder than a stock 95' z I'm guessing low-mid 13s if it didn't fall on its face at 5k it would be a beast....

The MAF sensor can measure something like 460-470 grams/second. A stock engine might pull 250 grams/second at WOT/5,800RPM. If it's reading 470GPS at 3,000RPM, there is definitely a problem. Is that what he meant by "maxing out"?
