You "build" a 383, starting with your stock block. You have the cylinders bored to 4.030" diameter (vs. 4.000" stock), and replace your stock 3.48" stroke crankshaft with a 3.75" stroke crankshaft. Then you get new rods and pistons, clearnace the block for the particular combo of part you chose for the rotating assembly. To make any significant increased power over the stock displacement, you need a set of heads that are ported to achieve a significantly higher intake and exhaust flow (ported stock LT1 heades will work up to a limit), then chose a camshaft that optimizes the heads' flow capabilities and provides the power level and driveability that you deem necessary. Support these mods with the requisite level of intake and exhaust upgrades.

Before you do anything....

-how much power do I want (and why)?
-how streetable does this car have to be?
-how will I use the car - street, strip, Auto-X, etc?
-what drivetrain upgrades will I need to support this power level?
-who will tune the PCM for these modifications?
-what suspension and chassis upgrades will I need to support this power level and the way I intend to drive the car?

and...... the BIG question.....

What is my budget for all of this?

You are looking at anywhere from $3,000 (moderate HP, economy parts, do almost all the build work yourself) to $15,000 (big HP, power adder, professionally built). Driveline and suspension upgrades can add another 50% to your costs.
