help on 383 or 396 build
hello,
i plan on building a 383 or 396 (buying a short block already assembled), and want to reuse the more parts i already have.
On the other hand i dont want to make this change if i dont get a real improvment in power level.
so give me your advice :
what i have and plan to reuse =
* LE heads
* 30 SVO injectors
* dual 52 holley
* LE 1.5 cam (? maybe best to change)
* all bolt-ons : CAI, long tubes, EWP, ...
what power level can i hope have then ?
should i better go 383 or 396 ?
is there some special advice to really acheive a power increase ? (change injectors ? TB ?)
thanks for your help
Pierre

383 v. 396 has been discussed here many times. A search will give you a lot of opinions. If you need a rebuild anyway, there is little downside to a stroker. But conversely, if the top end is unchanged it won't make much more power. The torque will increase in the low and mid rpm ranges, but don't expect a huge difference in performance.

i've seen yes lots of topics about 383 against 396, and to be honest haven't made my decision about it yet.
My major concern was more about what would be good to reuse on my engine and else what will i have to buy to see how many dollars it will cost me.
Also : any opinion on heads and cam so ? and what the maximum power level can i acheive, knowing i have a daily driver car that must stay streetable. I use an M6

I am in the same boat as you. I have pretty much the same mods as well.
I am going to use my LE heads on a 383. I am probably going to sell my large cam that was ground for a stock bottom end 350 that I had and get one specifically ground for the 383 and my goals. With the larger cubes you can get away with more cam.
If my thinking is correct, you should be able to jump to a larger cam with more cubes and still maintain some street manners and due to the larger cam, make more power then a smaller cam in a smaller engine. I am sure someone can verify this.
I am going to go with the 383 route I think. I have to get a new crank anyway so might as well up the cubes. Its just hard trying to find a good forged bottom end to fit into a 5K total budget with out going with cheap parts. I might be able to make it since I already have the heads and other supporting parts.
