Help 1996 Z-28 WON'T START "UPDATED"

My car has been sitting for a few months now. And when I tried to start it the battery was dead. I then charged the battery (with the cables connected to the battery) and the car now turns over but won't start. It seems to be not getting fuel. I can feel the Fuel pump relay click when I turn the key on. I have pulled a sparkplug to make sure I am getting spark. I pressed open the Shrader valve near the fuel rail and very little fuel trickled out.

So I have a few questions. What is the precedure for checking the fuel pump?

Do you think I fried something when charging the battery?

What does PCM stand for and where is it located?

Could it be the VATS causing this?

I really don't want to pay a kings ransom at the dealer to get this thing running.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Battery could still be "bad."

Have the battery tested.

Re: Help 1996 Z-28 WON'T START

There should be a small connector by the PCM (Powertrain Control mudule) which is by the windshield on the passenger side. If you put 12V to that connector your fuel pump should start. Start from there and see how it goes.
Good luck!

Re: Help 1996 Z-28 WON'T START

OK Fuel pump is bad. I cut the "trap door" in the back and removed. Bench tested..BAD!!

Now do I spend big bucks for the replacement assy locally or do I buy just the pump and put it in there. I am leaning towards just the pump as the sending unit is good. Are the aftermarket high-flow pumps noisy?

Also I broke the plastic retainer thingy on the fuel line. Not just the plastic insert but the plastic connector. Are these available?

Thanks again

If you hurry, Summit is running a special on the Granetelli Motorsports high volume pump. This pump is a direct replacement for the factory fuel pump with the offset pick-up. I got mine shipped for $111 and some change 2nd Day Air. I think the pump itself was $90 + $9.95 handling + $11 and some change to ship. My dremel won't be here til Friday (to cut the "trap door"), so I can't give any feedback on the performance, but it's just a re-packaged Walbro. It even says "Walbro" on the side of the pump.

BTW How did the trap door work for you? How long did it take? Did you have any trouble getting the sending unit out of the opening? Hopefully I'll get mine finished soon, and everything will be all gravy again.

Thumbs up Re: Help 1996 Z-28 WON'T START

EuroticCustoms,
That's exactly right I ordered the Granetelli from Summit. The trap door worked great. I used a pnuematic air cut-off tool for the opening. It took about 30 Minutes to complete the cutting with this tool. I think a dremel may take a bit longer. I rounded the corners of the opening to prohibit any cracking that might occur(just a precaution).
I hope the Granatelli is a direct fit. Customer service said that modifications were necessary. We'll see.

I ran into trouble releasing the fuel line fitting. Ended up breaking it actually. BE CAREFUL! I guess I'll see what the dealer says about a new one.

The trap door is a whole lot easier than dropping the axle & exhaust. Not to mention the tank removal. Kudos to the man who thought of this method.

The granatelli is not a direct fit. I believe quite a few people on here use the Granatelli w/o the stock bucket.

Re: Help 1996 Z-28 WON'T START

Just received tha Granatelli kit in the mail today. It looks fairly complete. I don't know what all the fuss is about modding/eliminating the bucket to make it work.............but I guess I will find out tomorrow.

Question. How important is the bucket? And what is it in there for exactly?

I don't plan to keep the car much longer. However I don't want to screw-over the next owner either.

Re: Help 1996 Z-28 WON'T START

just got my Granatelli in today. It was a great fit. Had to do some very slight modification to the rubber gasket that goes between the top of the pump and the bucket, but other than that...it's all gravy. Man this thing sure kicks the stock pump's butt.

How did yours go baja? I took pics and will be posting a write-up on my install. I got away with $120 for parts, took me 3 hours to do everything, including epoxying the bucket back together (i put it in before the time was up, but it was hardened).
