I have been smelling coolant but none hits the ground, if the car is at operating temps and sits at a light for a few seconds and then accelerates can smell the distinct smell of coolant being poured on some thing hot. So Imagine its pooling and then when the car moves splashing perhaps on to the header. The car doesn't over heat or any thing. Just really annoying and I hate the smell of coolant.

 

Check for leaks just after you shut it off (and still under pressure) or rent/buy a pressure tester so you can check it while it is cool.

 

I hadthis problem. I could have sworn it was the heater core. Hooked up a pressure tester and found a small drip from the top radiator hose pooling up on the water pump. I have a 160 thermostat on my 93 Z and with the engine at full operating temp I couldnt find the leak but Could still smell coolant, also the radiator was low. With the pressure tester pumped up to 18PSI the leak was found in two seconds.
