Heads on a stock motor?
Heads on a stock motor?
Hey guys, I was wondering if it is worth putting aftermarket heads on a stock motor. Only thing I have is exhaust and CAI, but I can get a brand new pair of fully assembled Edlebrock Performer RPM heads for a really good price. Is it worth putting them on my motor, and if so about how much hp would I see from them?
Thanks,
Brenden

Re: Heads on a stock motor?
From what I've heard, the Edelbrock heads aren't exactly the best thing around, nor are they better than a port job on stock heads for the price...again, from what I've heard. What do you mean by really good price? I would definitely go with some 1.7RR if no cam changes are planned in the near future after the heads, they will offer a nice little gain in lift over the stock ones.

By really good price I mean I can get a fully assembled pair for about $500. Thanks for the info and I will look into some others also, Edelbrock is just the ones I know now I can get for that price, I will see if I can get anyother's for a good price also.
Thanks again,

Re: Heads on a stock motor?
There was a recent thread on those, take a look at that. The stock heads are pretty good already $500 would be better spent on a cam, stall, gears, headers or the like, the heads are the wrong place to start. As far as the guys car who made 33Xhp with ported heads and a stock cam, I do realize the 9" is power hungry so I will give him that but there are full bolton b-bodies putting down over 300 with a heavier drivetrain and our smaller cam with our stock iron heads, and a few bolton cars in the 12s(b-bodies bigger cars with smaller cams
). So all you proved is your friend has a stong car not that ported heads with a stock cam is a good idea because it isn't. He may have gained power with the head swap but would have gained more with a cam.
IMO the Edelbrocks are a joke read their info closely to get the gains they post on their site not only did they swap heads and cam but headers as well, you can also bet that they used the worst LT1 heads they could find with a stock tune and then compared it to their heads and a dynotune.

96capricemgr - Thanks man, I actually have been thinking of just doing gears, shift kit, and a 2800 stall instead. From reading your post I will probably just go with that.

Re: Heads on a stock motor?
On the stall 2800 is great as long as you go with a 9.5" TC from a reputable shop Edge, Yank, Vig for example. I have a 2800 Edge it drives so well a memeber of this forum mistook it for stock the first time he was in my car, that was until I cracked the throttle. I even tow a small fishing boat and it is fine even pulling the boat out of the water, wife has no complaints when she drives it either.
Re: Heads on a stock motor?
The Edge is a bit over $500, Yank and Vig are a couple hundred dollars more. It is worth it to go to the smaller diameter and a good shop is a must. Before this I had a 2600 from Level 10 it was a 9.5" too but drove like crap and created a lot of heat, the 2800 from Edge drives better and runs cooler. I know it is a lot of money and the cheaper 12" converters look good from that standpoint but everyone who has tried both agrees that the high stall 12" are not worth it.
Re: Heads on a stock motor?
edgeracingconverters.com Andre is the man and his service is so good he remebers me when I call for more parts. He sells tranny coolers and such too so if you need any of that stuff he can help.
