heads...procomp or trick flow? unmolested, no CNC

i'll be using some aftermarket heads soon...and i ran into pro-comp heads from the guys who are selling me my stroker kit. anyone hear of them? i never did until they tried selling them to me...they have a 210cc runner and come in either a 62cc or 54cc chamber. and they're cheap...650 for assembled.

now i wanted some TFS heads, unmolested, and they're going to cost me 800 bare.

i'm looking for suggestions, money's tight, but not tight enough to buy crappy heads. i'd rather use stockers until i can get $$$ for some good heads...but i can afford the TFS off the shelf units

basically i'm looking for some flack on pro-com vs trick-flow. and i'm looking for some flow-chart numbers from anyone who has them. i can't find anything on procomp other than jegs and they dont have #'s, just runner size.

thanks

Does ProComp offer an LT1 head?

For most people's purposes ported stock heads are the best choice.

If you decide on aftermarket thbere are NONE worth using in as cast form.

I was not aware the Pro Comp makes and LT1 head either. I would make sure the engine shop unbderstands ypu have an LT1 and it uses different heads than a conventional SB Chevy. Maybe they know this and Pro Comp "does" make an LT1 head but I have never heard of it.

here's the thing. the company is out of TN. the guy i'm talkin to says he has several ltx and lsx based camaros and he's running procomp stuff on all his camaros/firebirds.

i'm thinking he's bs....but he' knows every single technical Q i've asked him about he car...ltx based any way. and he's using a procomp head on his 96 with a 'in-house' 383 stroker kit and is doing very well with it apparently.

BUT, i imagine they'd do anything for a sale....

so....should i do a hand port job on the heads? because i'm not paying 1500 for a CNC job on stockers...and i'm not paying 2500 for ported TFS heads....bare..................................... ..................i'd like to do my build under 3k with cam, rotating assy (non-forged) and heads (unmolested or hand ported factory)....and have about 400 hp rear wheel HP

so now i'm back to buying bare TFS heads, a hot cam kit, and some new valves.

and the company i'm buying from is white performance. they have a bare-bones, non-forged kit for 700 bucks...or from a company based off ebay but sells from ohio or something...CNC-motorsports.

i'm thinking cnc would be better. they have a fully forged eagle kit for 1500...and includes whatever pistons i want

You won't be doing 400 hp at the wheels with the hot cam kit.....

Pro-comp heads are cast in China and are some of the worst I have ever seen.

One forum I read has a lot of gen 1 motor owners and have heard stories of valvejobs cutting completely through the pressed in seat exposing the aluminum beneath as delivered from China.

Certainly possible the ports could be good shapes or the like, but if all the machining is done with typical Chinese attention to detail, well.......................................

You can check out strokerkits.com they have alot of different options for stroker kits. You can get a cast kit for 1,500 or a forged kit for 1,800. They may even be able to get you a forged kit for cheaper depending on your prefrences.

As far as the head goes, I would stick with the TFS head if you want a unmolested head (Don't waste money if you are unsure of something). Where can you get them for $800, is this for a pair. I found them for $970 on summit (Cheapest I could find).

Check your stock cast #'s, Send your stock heads somewhere to (AI or E-Portworks) and dump the hotcam if you want to obtain 400 RWHP. Look into a custom grind or GM847, CC306 etc.

Check out LE like Kaj said, the LE2 package with one of his custom grind cams will put you over 400RWHP with the right set of heads. You can get this kit on the cheap 2. I can not remember exact pricing but I think it is in the range of $1750 for the package. He will port match your intake to your heads as well for an extra $200. You just have to send your stock heads and intake to him.

One more positive for LLoyd Elliot. He is a stand up guy with a lot of knowledge plus easy to deal with. He is NightTrain66 that posted earlier in your thread. Try his website www.eportworks.com

i have a 97...the crappy heads. so i'm not paying that much on top with the core charge.

and i found my bare castings of the TFS heads on autozone's website...with a 20% military discount through the online store...free ship to any store...800 bucks. no tax cuz i'm going through the online store based in somewhere other than TX. so tax is cut.

thanks for the responses...i'll check the other websites for a good deal on a kit.
