Heads and Header install question.
Heads and Header install question.
This winter I was planning on doing the following mods myself:
1.) getting heads ported
2.) new cam (230/236 XE)
3.) springs,lifters,rods,rockers,HD timing chain
4.) CAI
5.) Headers (Jet-Hot), !CAT,!EGR,!AIR
6.) OVC wires
7.) Y-Pipe (coated)
8.) Cat-back
9.) PCMforless
My question is should I try to do this all at once, or should I do the exhaust side 1st and then break into the engine after I see everything is working right.
After reading alot of posts, it's obvious that Headers can be a real PITA. I figured that if I have the heads off, it would be far easier to get the headers in position. I'm just worried that if I do everything at once, it will be extremely difficult to troubleshoot problems once I'm done.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey Wing--Haven't talked to you before, just wanted to give you a
on your web site. Your header install guide will be a big help! Just wondering, if I have the heads off, will I just be able to lay the headers in the engine bay, bolt the heads on, and then bolt the headers on--will there be enough room to do this??
BadAssed93z: I wish I had the extra $3,000 for a 383! I'm with
you on that July 4th deadline!

I did exactly what you are going to do. I did it all at once and went with the XE224/230 LSA 112 cam. Have you seen the 230 cam in a car running? Downloaded videos don't do cam sounds justice. They normally sound louder and more lobey in person. IMO; for a daily driver vert I wouldnt go bigger than a 224. Just saying this because if you use your vert for street cruising and not much drag racing you may not like the 230 as much. Pics in the sig. It's a ragtop too.
Good luck.

Thanks 95RagtopTA. Is this Kyle? If not, I apologize. He's one of the few people I know of that has a 95 TA vert.
Anyhoo, dunno about laying the headers in the engine bay and then bolt the heads onto them. Never done that so I can't make a comment on that. But doing the cam/head/headers is easier than trying to do the headers themselves. Lots of room to work with if you can get into the engine bay. See pic. Nobody points and laugh.

Edit-Mr Kevlar has a good point about the bottom 7 head bolts. I couldn't retorque those after a few heating cycle.

No, because you will not be able to get to the bottom row of head bolts with the headers in the way.
