heads and cam now new problems????

just finished installing the LE2 package from LE and the car fired up pretty fast.. it ran kinda rough at first but now at idle it seems pretty good... did break in procedure and now i have a major oil leak on the front of the pan... any ideas on how to fix this... new oil pan gasket?? how much of a pain is it to replace the pan gasket?? also almost no brakes and the pedal is pretty hard to push... could this be because of the cam?? still have other problems... dies out in gear sometimes and things but this is a good start...

thanks guys

The oil pan gasket is a huge PITA to change with the motor in the car. You probably tore it when you removed the timing cover to install the cam. Either that or it's the crank seal on the timing cover, but I don't think that would be a "major" leak.

Since it's just an LE2 cam, I wouldn't think it could affect your brakes much. That and the rough idle sounds like you have a vacuum leak. The first place I would look is the brake booster on the driver's side. If that isn't attached/sealed correctly, it could cause both problems.

If you don't have any future plans of tearing it apart again and you also don't want to replace the gasket either, smother the ends of the gasket (or wherever its ripped) with some RTV sealant. I tore the corners off mine, and just filled it up with sealant and haven't had any leaks yet. Make sure it's nice and filled in though and give it plenty of time to dry. Then again, I don't plan on ripping it apart again until I have a new shortblock.

i just put a cam in my lt1 the other day. completely tore my old pan gasket. i had alread bought a new one before the swap cause it leaked. thought it would be easy, then found it was going to be a pain in the butt. i got it in there but not sure how it will hold up over time.

i couldnt get the old gasket out cause of the studs in the block. i used a socket to take the front 2 studs out and took out all the oil pan bolts. slid the new gasket under the pan, where the bolts go in. and then put it up over the lip of the pan.

pretty simple. no need to mess with rtv or lifting the motor.

i could give you better directions if you need

my rear of the pan use to leak like crazy. not anymore. ive got a little drip comming from the timing cover/pan, might not have it sitting in the gasket right, i just tightened up the bold up front to see if it would stop it.

def easier than anything else i've read about.

i just slid it next to the pan on the drivers side, and then slid it onder the pan. they clean it up before putting it up where it goes. try not to get it dirty.
