Heads/cam car wont start

its a 95 z28 A4 stock bottom end- trick flow heads with comp cam new lifters new pushrods. new plugs/wires/dis cap/ Edelbrock intake manidold 58 mm TB, new timing chain/sprockets (I know the timing is fine because I lined the the dots on the sprokets . The car turns over and keeps turning just wont start, the pushrods move up and down and so do the rockers but the vavle springs dont move only one or two move. like most of the springs dont open and close. I only noticed intake spring on #8 and i think one moved a lil on the driver side. No oil is being squirted from the lifters over the rockers either( i have the vavle covers off.) there is enough fuel in the tank. I did bath the lifters in oil before install but i put them in over the weekend. I also put oil in the oil filter so their is oil pressure right away. the rocker arms are the only thing stock on the upper end of the motor ( comp cams said i was fine running 1.5 i just wouldnt make all the power the cam can make until i get 1.6.
What could be going on plz help thanks.

Sounds like the rockers are not ajusted right. Are the plungers on the lifters just sinking in or somthing when its suppost to be opening the valve? Also did you actualy prime the lifters not just soak them in oil?

Re: Heads/cam car wont start

i never primed the lifters im guessing thats where i messed up and the way i adjusted the rockers was by turning the motor by hand and when every pushrod got to its peak id tighten till no play then do the 3/4 turn the book said to do. And what do you mean by plungers? the only part i see move in the rocker is the part that sits on the pushrod.

He is talking about the plunger within the lifter. The lifters pump up with oil which keeps the plunger from collapsing. If they are not pumping up with oil or they are bleeding down when pressure is put on them, they will not open the valve the correct amount. Also if you put them in dry you could have tightened down the rockers too much essentially bottoming out the plunger.

You need to adjust the valve lash correctly.

Re: Heads/cam car wont start

k shoebox i have a question. I read your page and I understand it but not fully. I wanna know if i can do it this way. I turn the motor by the crank with a breaker bar. I will have a freind on top guiding me, when the pushrod gets to the bottom or lowest point( base of cam lobe)I will tighten the rocker arm. I will do this in the firing order so i dont get confused. Does this sound fine? thanks for the help guys

It would be better to follow one of the methods described. I use method #1 all the time, but #3 is probably the most foolproof.

(E-O-I-C) method : Exhaust-Opening/Intake-Closing. when the exhaust valve starts to open adjust the intake valve on that cyl. when adjusting for the exhaust valve watch the intake valve open then on its closing cycle, about 1/3-1/2 max returning, then adjust the exhaust valve on the same cyl. this method you don't have to go through any firing order you can just start at one end and work your way around.
