headlight motor

ok, my headlight died, or so i thought, so i bought a new one. i thought about doin teh gear thing, but the motor didnt make any noise at all when it went up and down. so ne way i put the new one in and it doenst work... the fuses is good i checked that already, so it must be the wireing? the old motor hooked up teh the wireing on the other side worked, so it has to be? what do i do now

Corrosion in the connector which prevents motor operation happens every so often. So, check the connector on that side and make sure it is clean, all pins are there, and in general it just looks OK.

If it isn't the connector then it could possibly be the headlight control module. This module is located behind the driver side headlight. Hopefully this isn't it because they are rather expensive!

Please, only one TTT per 24 hour period. Doing this excessively is not fair to the other members. Your topic is no more important than the topics of the other members here Unless, of course, you are stranded somewhere and then we can make exceptions

I don't know what you mean by "fuse" in this case. I'm not aware of any fuses downstream of the control module.

If you can use a test light/meter, check for voltage at the connector.

If you have a bud with a Firebird, ask him if you can swap control modules to test his in your car. That'll tell you if it is a bad control module or not.

sorry about the ttt... i have been trying to get this done today, teh headlight motor was a christmas gift, and my car has been winking for 6months, lo. im sure you understand the frustration... im saying is that when i stuck the volt meter in were the fuse plugs inn it reads zero, but the other fuses dont read zero.... so taht fuse is getting no power. if that makes any sense? and i dont have any friends w/ f-bodys around here so i cant test modules? any other help? your the only person that has a clue about this, i posted on ws6zxr too.....?

If you are getting power at the one connector that works and not at the connector where the motor doesn't work, sounds like a problem with the wiring between the module and the connector or the module itself.

The headlight motor that was on there previously... did it at least move? Then, when you stuck the new motor in there it didn't work at all? If so, it is possible the motor you just got is bad and damaged the module. You mentioned that you connected the old motor to the other side... have you tried your new motor on the other side?

well.. the old motor didnt work at all, i coudl manually move it, but not other wise, and it did teh same thing w/ the new motor, so wireing would make sense, but how do i find were that is, and/or fix it

Take a look at the connector which plugs into the control module (on the headlight side). Look and see which pins/wires send out the juice to the non working side. Unplug the connector and see if you now have juice there (and at the other side too). If you don't, the module is shot. If you do, thoroughly check the wiring between the module and the headlight motor.

Yes, half of it could be bad.

They are expensive too. I think they go for around $50 at the salvage yard... cheaper if you have one of the "old time" salvage yards that don't computerize everything and charge a percentage of new list!

Speaking of... I sure do miss the day when you'd go to the junk yard, grab a few parts, walk to the counter and the dude would say "Hmm... give me $5." I digress

No good ones... that's my point... that's the type you WANT. Call them up and see if they have a 93 to 02 Firebird. If they do, chances are you can pick it up CHEAP.

Don't have that particular part number memorized and can't find my parts CD right now. Maybe shoebox (resident part number guru! ) will see this and respond with a part number for ya
