Headers yes or no?
Headers yes or no?
I have a set of edelbrock headers for my 97 Z28. Now ive been thinking about installing them but really been thinkin cause i read so much about long tubes over shorties. These headers were like 540 new i picked em up for 300. But what i really want to know.. how much more money does it cost for me to go to long tubes. if i could sell these headers and get maybe my 300 back and then what extra will it cost, set of good LT's? what brand? and what will it cost to get my cats moved and the y pipe created roughly? or that all depend on shop? or since i already got the headers, just put em on and go with it. I just wanna get this stuff done because i am having a lag problem in higher rpms. thinking its my o2 sensors, i got all new ones waitin on me installing headers, i just really wanna go to the track and run but cant with the lag my car hits. I know this is all mumbled together im just look for opinion on if you think i should splurge for the LT's or use the shorties i already got. I just dont want these shorties if they are gonna lose that much power over LT's, not to mention the trouble ive heard with the plugs with edelbrocks. Thanks guys you always help

I say do it right the first time. Don't put on the shorties and regret it later, wishing you put on long tubes. Sell the shorties and with $250 more; you can get some Jet Hot long tubes ceramic coated and delivered to your house. Or like mentioned before, get Pacesetter's long tubes ceramic coated for about $450. Plus, long tubes have real good plug access.
I, too have read that long tubes are better, but don't discount the shorties completely. I've been running LPE 1 3/4" shorties for 10 years making 420 rwhp. If the Edelbrocks are 1 5/8" primaries then I would consider selling them for some 1 3/4" long tubes like Pacesetter, Jet Hot, Hooker (all of which I believe offer Y pipes). IMHO you really need 1 3/4" primaries if you are planning future mods. Doing plug changes with shorties is a nightmare, however.

I would go with the long tubes. I went with the shorties because I needed my car to be street legal in California. But I have edelbrocks and I dont think doing the pplugs is bad but I bet it is better with long tubes.
i figure frank might follow up right after me but...
don't discount middies
they save ground clearance, keep emissions compliant (as in location of the cat), and flow pretty well too
should be getting mine soon

ipaid 500 for jethots brandnew, the coating worth its wait in gold. and its nice to park the car for 7 or 8 min. and then just go out there and grab the primary and just barley warm.
ceramic coated hookers are right at 700 last time looked. and the ceramic coating is not near good as jethot coating
every body likes pacestters but they dont have jet hot coating and thats antor 250 if you sent them off to jethot.
so why not just buy the jethots.

i have the Pacesetter LTs with Y-Pipe and no cats. Awesome fit and excellent ground clearence. I havent scrubbed them on anything yet! I'd say go with the LTs, but shorties are great too. Any header will provide you with gains. It helps the car breathe. Good luck with you decision.
I vote to keep the shorties and put them in. If you don't like them, try something else. Most likely you will keep them in. The hardest part of the header install is getting the factory manifolds out, so once you have shorties in, is is pretty easy to take them out if you ever wanted to go with long tubes.
After looking at the performance of LT's and the performance of other headers, I chose midlengths. I have yet to see LT guys making much more power, if any, than the same setup with MAC mids.
Look at Advanced Inductions website and you will see that cars are putting down the same HP/TQ numbers with LT's and Mids all the way past 400 rwhp.

im not knocking shorties but anyone pushing over 400hp withshorties is doing good but if they put on lts they would get more hp out of the same setupby changing headers.
bottom line is you will gain more hp with lt. and the more you do the car the more you will gain from the mod. like haeds and cam will benifit from shorties, but and long tubes to that same heads and cam and you will make more hp. its just fact.
but take all your goals into account and see if shorties fit in the pic.
ive never seen someone change to shorties from longtubes, but i see alot of the oppisite.
