Headers, whats their advantage?

well my friend said they will make u about .5 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile... but his results dont prove this... any how

what do they do and what do they improve?

I know they even the pressure out between each cylinder...

does it help w/ heating at all...

he says it gives 20 hp, but i dont see how 20 hp could improve .5 seconds in 1/4 mile... it must do something besides 20 hp

any info u know about headers would be useful

First, there are two main kinds of headers, Long tubes and short tubes. Long tubes provide more power, but most are not emissions legal. Shorties are legal, but don't provide the power of long tubes.

shortties are usually good for 10-20hp, LTs are good for 25+.

The primary benifit of headers is improved exhaust scavangeing, one pulse wave of exhaust creates a low pressure behind it, thus pulling the next pulse wave. They are also bigger and flow more than stock manifolds, if you want power, you mst use headers in order to not choke the engine.

The amount picked up on the et is variable, but usually between .2 and .5 seconds.

Tried to keep it short, hope that answers some of your questions.

go get a straw, and try to blow through it as hard as possible, and then go get an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll, and do the same thing. then you tell me what headers do. In not so many words of course

how can 10-20hp increase .2-.5 seconds?

does this mean the lt1 is already chocking at stock?

you aren't going to see a .5 decrease in 1/4 time. Just not going to happen unless your manifolds are plugged up......lol

Like "5.0" said............they just flow the exhaust better.

Jason's quote:
"If you can't get the exhaust out you can't get air in"

that's the lamens term of it.

Same thing goes for heads----you can't flow it, you don't got it

Here's some extra info to think about.................I saw and earlier post about Mac headers----i think was by you. The Mac headers come with a 5/8 primary, not the 3/4 in primary.

So here is the advice

Larger primary=more torque less hp
Smaller primary=more top horsepower lower torque

And then you need to know the difference between torque and hp.............someone else can explain that.............lol

Actually the stock manifolds flow pretty good......it's not choking stock. You see the bigger gains when you get head and cam package.......then add headers and you will see a larger hp gain.

The exhaust manifolds ARE THE BIGGEST RESTRICTION on a stock LT1.

I ran consistant 9.4XX with Moroso CAI and Borla to consistant 8.6XX with FLP LTs, Moroso CAI, and Borla in the 1/8th.

Not very typical. But then again, new plugs and wires helped during the header install.

headers dont make or create power.. they simply let the motor live up to its potential. what headers do is decrease backpressure which is the pressure created when exhaust gasses are compressed as they are pushed out of the cylindar. naturally the easier/faster the exhaust can escape.. the less power will be lost(not the more will be created). headers allow more room for the exhaust gas to spread out.. the more room the exhaust has is directly proportional to the size of the header which in turn is directly proportional to the amount of freed up ponies.

and we do heads/cam, not heads/cams

=)

We only need 1 cam.

Torque vs HP.....um.....

Torque is hte get up and go, the HP is the going.=)
