headers and o2 sensors clarification

ok just bought some long tubes and I was about to buy some o2 extensions when my buddy says I don't need them. I thought you have to have them in the collectors where the welded o2 bungs are. I plan on tuning them out but how many total o2 sensors does my 96 OBDII have? thanks for replies

You have a total of 4 sensors, two before the catalytic converters and two after. If you have long tubes then you will need 02 harness extensions... I bought a pair of 12inch extensions and they seemed to be the perfect length. As for tuning out the 02 sensors, you are thinking of the rear sensors.. You can either tune them out of the PCM or you can run 02 simulators which simply plug into your harness extension and provide a "dummy" signal to the PCM.

Cliff Note Version:
To basically sum everything up, you need the front two 02 sensors and they thread into the bungs on the headers. You do not need the rear 02 sensors and to prevent an SES light, use 02 simulators or have the codes deleted out of the PCM.

Thanks for the help 2000GTP. I think Pacesetter supplies the wires to cut and splice to extend them, is that a PITA and is it just better to buy the extensions? Oh, and where did you buy them at?

Yes, Pacesetter supplies all of the necessary hardware to cut/splice your harnesses to extend them, but I found that the 02 harness extensions are alot faster and safer to install. You can get them at www.thunderracing.com I bought mine directly from Speed Inc., but I live right by their shop. They will run about twenty bucks a piece.
