I did gears first, 3.73s from Richmond.

I did my 4.10's a few years before headers...As a matter of fact, I just did headers when I did the ported head/cam swap.
With exhaust manifolds, and a completely stock (right down to the rockers, t-body, fpr, and injectors) I went 12.82 @ 105.9 MPH..With a full eight (3448#), stock suspension car.

I too did gears first, but if I had to do it again I would put in LTs first.

I'd go with headers first, it'll give you some horsepower unlike the gears.

I would also recommend going with some Hooker Long tube headers. If you decide that you want to go with gears than I would recommend 3.73 for an A4.

Headers would give you more performance over gears. if you do get gears, get the GM motives. They tend to make less noise than Richmond others. I would do headers first. I ran 13.01@109 with cold air, RK SPort headers, and Borla cat back (stock gears) 3.42 M-6

Everybody has an opinion...

Mine is the headers will actually provide horsepower and perhaps a minimal mpg increase, unlike gears. If smog is an issue go with some shorties that are emission compliant. If you want them to look good and keep them a long time get them coated. If you don't care about crappy looks and/or plan on upgrading them within three years or so get some cheapy 1 5/8 headers. I used Edelbrock 1 5/8 headers for three years and upgraded to longtubes when I put in the stroker short block.

13.01 at 109mph with just an intake, shorties, and a catback?

was this downhill during a hurricane force tailwind or something?

You'd be suprised what perfect driving can do. Who was it that for a magazine ran like a 13.3 or so on a bone stock Z28 Lt1 M6 ... He was the same dude who ran a 12.7 or 8 in a bone stock LS1 too .... Some ppl just have a nack for launching and shiftin ...
