Headers Or Cam ?

I found a buyer for that ls1, and will be getting $1900 for it, anyways I was thinking what would be the next best mod. Its between mid tube macs headers or a C305 cam, or would I be able to do both with only $1900 ? My car has 106,000 miles and its my dd but I want to take it out to the track occasionally.

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

Get your headers first, otherwise you'd be choking your cam off.

Looking at your post, you should have plenty if you have $1900. Get yourself a respectable cam kit from cmotorsports.com or, better yet, check out eportworks.com

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

What else will I need to purchase to install the cam, will I need a torque converter? I really dont know much about cams, but I have read many post on a cc305......seems to me this cam is great for a stock lt1. Will my be able to handle a cam, even if I have that many miles on my car?

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

Get a torque converter to match the RPM range of the cam you want. I'd go with a stall anywhere from 2800-3200 with a cc305. I'd also get some gears, but they aren't required. For an auto, you may want to look into 3.73 gears.

Also if you want to retain your stock waterpump, you'll want to replace your stock timin set with a LT4 ED set. Either that or you can go with an electric waterpump and a double-roller Cloyes set. I have read that some people have gotten away with a simple stock replacement timing set with a smaller cam like the hotcam or 305. It all depends on how hard you want to drive your car, whether or not you take it to the track often, etc.

I'd also replace the stock lifters with at least a new set of stock replacement lifters, if not a set of comp r's. That and I'd check out a set of steel 1.6 NSA rockers with 7/16" studs. You could get away with a set of CM612 single springs (good to ~.600" lift) with matching retainers, etc.

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

For the money you have to spend IMO I definitley wouldn't waste it on mid lengths (unless clearance is an issue). But like people have been saying you can easily do both if you do the work yourself.

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

I would rather have a shop install the headers and cam, I would hate to mess up something with my car. I know the basic's oil change and stuff like that but I heard headers are a bi*# to install. I had no idea that I would be able to afford some heads, I thought they run for like $1,600 atleast. Would my car be able to handle all this, reason im asking...my buddy said I would probably blow the motor with that many miles on it.

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

would the le1 package be okay for my car that has over a 100k miles on it?
Would I need to buy anything else? What is a good price that most shops charge for installation? By the way thanks for the advice, that website has some great prices.

Re: Headers Or Cam ?

From looking at your sig it doesn't look like you really have any mods yet. If it were me and the car was my daily driver I would do this...
Jet Hot Longtubes, Offroad Y-pipe and a good Catback $1000
A good streetable torque converter $?? Not sure, my car is an M6, but this will be one of the best mods you can do for a A4 car.
Gears- maybe some 3.73's
A good CAI- intakes are pretty straight forward. Pick whatever you like.
A mail order tune for the above mods.

Keep in mind that I made this list with the idea that you don't have any of these mods yet. This list will also be stretching your budget and may exceed it. If you can't do the installs yourself then you won't come close to your budget. I say work on the car yourself, shop the boards for some good deals on used parts and come it at or under you budget. If you don't have the above mods that I listed, forget heads and cams for now. However, this is just my opinion and its your money.....spend it how YOU really want to. Good luck

Timeframes all depend on workload. I don't know how busy Lloyd is. I guess a month. If your going to pay for labor don't expect to get more than either the cam or the headers you won't have enough money more than likely. I'd say your car can take it. These engines are designed to last a long long time. Your weakest link with your miles would definately be your tranny. Installing a higher rpm stall might just be detrimental. Other than that you'll need header gaskets if you get headers. If you change the cam you'll need an heavy duty timing chain kit and a complete timing cover gasket set and Intake manifold gasket set and if you decide to do the heads as well you'll need new head gaskets. All the little stuff ads up to a couple hundred dollars alone. Shorties and midlengths are a waste of money imo unless you have no choice b/c of emissions. They're not any easier to install in most cases cost as much as some LT's and don't produce as much power.
