Header vibrations? Change your motor mounts!
Header vibrations? Change your motor mounts!
By the way, this thread is a little, lets say delayed. I changed my motor mounts about three weeks ago because I had a terrible vibration from my header install. You see the collectors on my headers were touching my K-member so you could imagine how bad it was. I tried the usual quick "fixes" like the heater hose but of course that all melted away.
I finally got to business and bought the Energy Suspension poly mounts. I don't recall the price but they are not expensive at all. Changing the mounts took a good part of a day but it was no where near as bad as the header install. The only problem I encountered on the drivers side was the steering linkage. It kept getting in the way and not allowing me to pull the mount out. Since I had to take it off anyways for the header install, I knew pretty much what I was doing. Drivers side was hard mostly because there isn't a lot of room in there, but once again, if you have done headers, this is not bad at all.
I was suprized at the overall lack of bad vibrations with the more solid poly mounts over the junk stock mounts. They ended up raising my motor about 3/4 of an inch and that gave me the all necessary clearance for my headers. In my opinion, change them if you are doing headers anyways, even if you don't think you need them! Here are a couple of pictures of the mounts and install. You can really see how bad my stockers were and how much they sagged.

Great Pics of the mounts. The stock ones look bad. I had always read about how poor they were but never seen them after years of use.
Got any quick tips for the install?

Yeah i just put some ES poly mounts in my car while doing my t ubular Kmember swap.
To give you an idea of what stock motor mounts with 160k miles look like, yours look great in comparison

Re: Header vibrations? Change your motor mounts!
I just ordered the red motor mounts. My motor is out of the car and front end laying on the ground. After I get the rivets out, do I need to rivet them back, leave it, and bolt it back up, or put some hardware where the rivets were, then bolt them back to the k member?

Re: Header vibrations? Change your motor mounts!
I have the Prothane kit and they supply cable ties to loop through the drilled out rivet holes. I will be installing my headers, motor mounts, mail-order tune, and a new cat-back starting next Friday so I will keep everyone posted when it is done.

I thought mine were pretty bad. I forgot to take a picture of the drivers side mount in the shell before I took it off but oh well.As far having to use new rivies, you dont. The passenger side you use zip ties to hold it together and then the three bolts that fasten the mount to the k-member are what actually hold it together. The drivers side does need to be rebolted, but mine came with the bolts.
