Header melting o2 wires

I think that my passenger side header is melting the o2 wires that run between the header and the inner fender. I got freescan working and scanned my car and it said that the right o2 sensor failed...so i jacked the car up and switched o2 sensors and it still said the right one has failed. I looked and the wires for the o2, knock sensor, and starter run very close to the header(touching in places).

Has this ever happend to anyone else with stupid hooker lts(i will never buy hooker headers again...they dont fit anything right)? What did you do, reroute the wires, wrap them in heat wrap or something else?

Thanks
James

Some thing happened to me on the same side. I first diced and spliced then routed them away with the extra length I added. 20ga. wire from Napa I think. They are working good now.

Mine run really close to my Mac headers as well. I just wrapped them in some heat wrap from Thermo-tec. I can't remember off hand what it's called, but it works really good!!!

They also sell extensions for them if you're not skilled at soldering.

Ya i already got the extensions, but just because i was told that slicing and dicing will ruin the wires and they will not work right(don't remember why). The funny thing is that the knock sensor and starter wires run right by them and those two work just fine.

All i hope is that i dont have to take that f-ing header out because it is a huge pain. Never have i had a set of hooker headers fit well.

No wire is going to stand up to touching a header...you either need to lengthen them some more (the extensions come in various lengths) or reroute them better. I wrapped my extensions with foil heat tape, but I still routed them plenty far enough away. I'd shoot for at least 3/4" air gap around the header tubes.

Slicing and Dicing wont hurt anything. Mine work fine and I was told by many reputable people here that there would be no problem. I had to do all the wires on that side, my Knock sensor and Starter worked to but I did them anyways since the insulation was browned.

Re: Header melting o2 wires

I just used about a dozen zip ties and rerouted the wires around the headers. Another one that was really close on my headers and had me scratching my head wondering what the burning smell was for so long was that damn speed sensor on the pass side thats clipped to the inner shock tower. I pulled the clips holding it down and noticed the plastic shroud around the wires was slowing melting away... couple of zip ties later and all is good again. Hooker headers can be a real PITA.. always burning **** and always rubbing the body somewhere on my car.

I hear that...but a word of advice, keep an eye on those zip ties once in awhile.

I recently found my #5 wire laying against the header and burned through. All of them were gone...we had them dressed up nice and tight to the block, but the heat apparently melted the zip ties. I replaced it and added several more zip ties, but also used some of the plug wire specific spacers and plan to check them regularly.
