header install/tuneup... should i bother replacing 02 sensors?

car has 83k miles on it, and it runs good. Im doing plugs, wires, and what not else but im debating skipping the 02 sensors since they are so expenisve. Opti was replaced roughly 13k ago so thats fine. I dont think mine could possibly be hurt - ive pulled 30mpg on the highway and ive hung with a couple of LS1s before. I know i can go without, but im a perfectionist that usually buys the best or nothing at all opinions?

I have about the same amount of miles as you and I am doing headers too. (as soon as the get here, I ordered about 1.5 weeks ago and was told they might be up to 3-4 weeks due to backorder ) I already got my new o2's in hand, but am not planning on installing them right at the same time since I have read soo many times of o2 failure directly following headers due to coatings and crap from the install.. I got both from Dal for ~$90 or so, not bad for piece of mind and to help with the tune up...

If your SES light is not on the O2 sensor are fine.

yea if i did get new ones i was planning on keeping the originals for the first 3k or so until the coating set in.

noted however, say i planned on keeping the originals, would the fresh coating finish them off?

As a fellow perfectionist, my recommendation would be to leave the O2 sensors alone. I now have 170K on the original O2's on my 95. Just came back from a long trip and got a minimum of 25 MPG and also got up to 29 MPG. This is with a recent spark plug and wire replacement as well. I also have the original converter and Opti in the car.

Have fun with those wires! It took me 2 days to complete. It just takes a lot of patience. I took the extra care to route them thru all the factory clips beside the headpipes to make sure they wouldn't get burnt. Good luck and have fun!

thanks for the input! About the wires... im thinking about doing the over-the-valve-cover setup, just because they look cool and i dont feel like dealing with that nightmare

edit: noticed that was your first post, welcome to the board

I got them just in case I needed them, I am planning on doing a full tune up too including seafoaming the engine so that might also cause a problem for the o2's too...

Like I stated above "not bad for piece of mind and to help with the tune up..."
