header install

ok so im almost in the final stages of my header install. I have the drivers side completely finished and am working on the passenger side. I have all 6 bolts off the manifold, but am having some troubl at getting the dipstick tube out. I removed the bolt, but the thing doesn't seem to want to budge. Any suggestions?

Also on the very end of the passanger manifold it appears that there is a tube going into the manifold (not A.I.R. or o2 sensor), what is it and how do I get it off. It seems to be holding the manifold to the block.

Thanks
Decker

Re: header install

If I remember correctly, there is an AIR tube going into the back of the intake from the passenger side exhaust manifold.....it is bolted to the intake with two bolts. Needless to say, it isn't on my car anymore . Check out Shoebox' website.... you will probably find a picture there of what you are taling about.

Re: header install

The oil dipstick takes a lot of "wiggling" and cuss words to get it out and put it back in.
The passenger side of the intake manifold you are speaking of is an AIR tube running in there. Just unbolt it and put a block off plate over it. EGR is on the other side fo the intake manifold. You can also remove that if you would like and put a block off plate over the hole there.
Good luck

Re: header install

To remove the dipstick, after removing the bolt I used either a long metal rod like a screwdriver, or a block of wood (cant remember which), wedged it against the dipstick and gently tapped it out with a hammer.

And as for the Airtube... do you mean hte EGR?

That tutorial may be helpful, just apply it to whatever headers you are installing.

I did that but ended up shearing off the mount and putting a hole in the dipstick. I had to get the vice grips out, deform the tube and beat it out. It will seem like it goes on forever. It probably has 4-5" in the block. I had to buy a new dipstick tube.

I put mine in the frezzer made it alot easier to go in just slipped right in. When I got mine off I just cleaned it up and left it in the frezzer till I was ready to put it back in.

Re: header install

A little wiggling of the dip stick tube and it should come out, make sure you clean it good and use some emery cloth on the end of it and it'll slide right in. Good luck!

Re: header install

Just make sure you pull the tube straight up so you don't bent it...take the actual dipstick out before to or you'll break it.

Re: header install

I got my dipstick tube out far enough so that I could slide a small closed end wrench around the tube, just under the lip that circles the tube at the block. Then I Pushed or hammered up on the wrench. Works great putting it back in too. Make sure to remove the bolt holding the dipstick tube first though.
