Header gaskets

Hey all Ive had fel-pro 1406's on my car for a while now and ive recently come up with some blow outs (leaks) along the gaskets. I dont know if the engine running funny could cause leaks there or whatever but they blew. I want to get some gaskets Ill NEVER have to mess with again if I replace them, anyone have any suggestions or advice? Also can header gasket leaks (these are fairly minor) mess with o2 sensor readings and cause emissions to suffer? What about power?

Re: Header gaskets

I don't know that the FELPROS are prone to leakage, but I do know that not all header flanges are created equally.

When last my headers were off (SLP shorties) the mechanic pointed out that the flanges were black where they were apparently leaking.

On further examination it was determined that the flanges on one header were not level and machined them down a bit.

So if you sense that this might be a problem, you'd be advised to address this issue before looking for gaskets to solve your leaks. JMHO

some people will say the aluminum works best, but I have known some to swear by copper as well. also, I've seen many people here say the fel-pro is great and never had problems with it. but if a fel-pro went out on you you might need to check the flanges as they might cause other gaskets to fail.

for loss of power it is possible for loose headers to give false knock and the KM will pull some timing. what kind of bolts did you use?

Yeah, I had the copper gaskets. They were definately better than the paper/fiber gaskets. I just wanted to try the aluminum. I have them now, though not installed yet cause I am still waiting on the block, but I have to admit, they look like they would seal an extremely warped flange.

yeah, I was looking at them in Jegs and Summit and thought I might try them as I just got my LT's in and looked at the paper gaskets and wondered if they work very well.

After seeing them now, I don't think I would consider any other gasket. These things look good
