header burnt through my brake line !?!
header burnt through my brake line !?!
i have jet hot long tubes, and on my drivers side, it burnt through my brake line, i even had my brake line heat wrapped. so i need to relocate those brake lines on my drivers side. has anyone else had this problem? if so where did you re-route yours to? any pics are appreciated. thanks

I also just installed some Jet Hots on my car, and for some reson mine don't touch the brake lines. They're a few centimeters away, but I just put some heat residtant tape on them just in case. I don't understand how much different our cars can be.

Do you mean the ABS wheel sensor harness? Headers don't come anywhere close to a brake line on our cars.

i was thinkin the same thing i cant see the header touching a brake line, and it cant burn through a metal line.
Actually the brake line going to the rear brakes runs down the driver side frame horn right past the headers. If someone had moved theirs or rebent it I can see it getting to a header very easily.
been there done that. its the line that runs down the side of the driver side wheel well. Mine popped out of the mounting bracket and rubbed up against the primary on the header until it rubbed a whole. you can pick up some cheap connectors at most auto places and it is a simple repair. only thing is you will have to bleed the brakes.
Mine was touching when my motor revved. I took a tubing bender and rebent the line until it was plenty clear of the header. I have no doubt in my mind that it would have burnt through eventually
it wasn't touching it,but it was about 1/4 inch away when i installed them, and after about a month, the line was singed a little bit, so i wrapped it up in heat wrap, and it still burnt through ?? yes it was burnt by my primary tube.

Perhaps I'm just not understanding, so correct me if I'm wrong. For the most part of the brake line system, the brake lines are metal with the exception of the caliper hoses which are rubber. How can you burn through a metal brake line? The caliper hoses don't come anywhere close to the primaries. If it wasn't so hot outside, I'd go out to the garage and pop the hood on my car to try and figure out what the heck you guys are talking about. When I put my headers in, the only brake related items that I had to reposition were the ABS wheel sensor harnesses. I remember someone else posting last year that his headers burned through a brake line, and he completely lost brake pressure. Still to this day I can't see how that's possible!
If at all possible, try to get some pictures taken of the damage and post them so that we can see what it is that you're talking about.

The metal brake tubing is under extremely high hydraulic pressure when you apply the brakes - up to 1,500psi. When the tubing it cold, it is able to contain the pressure. When you heat the tubing (header tube metal temps can aprroach 1,000degF - how hot do you think a brake tube 1/4" away will get?), the tubing softens, and bursts under the extreme hydraulic pressure. It doesn't "burn", it more likely "melts". This problem has been reported several times in the past relative to the LT's. The factory puts a thin metal shield over the brake lines that are near the drivers side exhaust manifold. The headers will simply put the hot tubes even closer to the brake lines.
