Head work quote I got today.
Head work quote I got today.
I got what seems to be a great quote from a local speed shop today to work on my stock LT1 heads.
They called it their "stage two" heads
2.02/1.60 Valves
Race port Job
Comp Valve Job
Mill surface
Stainless valves
Comp Springs and retainers
Screw in studs and guide plates
assemblied for $1000
This sounds pretty good huh? They also flow test them. I am defininty going to have them do it the end of this month. The heads are already off the car. Anything else I should have them do? I don't know alot about head work so I am open to suggestions. I hear that 2.00/1.57 are the largest you can go with stock seats. I guess the valve job they do fixes that. Are their any problems with either of the 2.02/1.60 valves hitting the head with a .010 mill with .540 lift?
Thxs

Sounds like a good deal to me as long as they do a good job. Those should work great for your mods and you shouldnt have to worry about anything. See if you can get some flow numbers from them though.
The 2.00/1.57's are as large as you can go and "PROPERLY" seat with the stock seats. The 2.02/1.60's will fit in the head and seal off but if you are wanting the valves to be sealing at the edge of the valve, the 2.00/1.57's are as large as you can go. The 2.02/1.60's overhang the stock seat even if the seats are opened up as large as possible. The 2.02/1.60's seem to work OK in the heads and will make more power than the stock valves but it just is not "right". You are basically cutting the seat AS LARGE AS POSSIBLE and the 2.00/1.56 or 1.57's will seal fine. Wi the 2.02/1.60's you are just putting a larger valve in front of the same size hole.
There is usually ALOT of piston to valve clearance on LT1's. It is always a good idea to check but even a stock bottom end can handle a pretty large cam and be fine.
It seems like a good deal on the heads.

Just do a background check on the place your dealing with. Ask around to a few people and see if they reccomend them or not. There are speed shops here in town I could call and get a quote just like yours, but their work is for crap. If they are reccomended, it sounds like a good deal.
Hey Breast96Z,
It's at Kittlers in Bossier over on Barkdale blvd. Do you know anything about their work?? They had an LS1 head that looked like it had been quickly done but I don't know much about head work to say if it was a good job or not.
I did some reading an saw that having a 30 degree back cut on the valve really helps the flow numbers though out the range. Even more so than adding bigger valves by themselves without the cut. I don't now anyone around here that knows what Shreveport has to offer, good or bad, as far as speed shops go and their services. You recommendations would be of great help.
Nighttrain66,
You sent me an email about a week or so ago about head work.
I am still looking around. What you said made alot of sense. You have the experience so I think I will do the 2.00/1.57 sizes. Can you recommend a good valve brand. One that has backcuts, ect. If they exsist that is.
I just got this quote from a local shop that I didn't know exsisted until the other day. Just because they are so close makes me want to go with them for the sole reason to save on packaging, shipping cost, ect. I am hoping to hear back from "beast96z" to see if he knows anything about them. My gut is just telling me to play it safe and send my heads to you though. You have been very helpful and I hate to end up with junky heads.

The back cut on the valves is done at the machine shop. I guess some valves come with a back cut, thin 45 degree margin, or what ever. If the machine shop is just gonna slap the valve in then it really doesn't matter what valve you use. Rev, Manley, SI, etc. They are all gonne ba about the same and cost "about" $10 each. If the machine shop is gonna back cut them and make sure the angles are the same width and match the seat wee, than the Ferrea is the best choice.
The Ferrea is the best valve out of these choices. They are more $$$ but they are NICE. If the guy doing the valve job is doing it right, the Ferreas are slightly better.
