Head porting experts-critique these head ports

I wanted to get an unbiased opinion of the intake and exhaust ports on these heads. Anyone care to take a guess on the intake size of the heads?
Thanks,

Matt

Without pictures it's going to be a VERY rough estimate....

There should be 6 pics showing above. They are hyperlinked from ls1tech.

I opened your post with the EDIT button, copied and pasted the links, and all I get is a blank screen.

It should be fixed now. I had the album set to private instead of public.

Try this: Measure the width and height of the ports just inside the port opening. Then, using a flexible measuring tape, measure along the center line of the port from the port opening to the center of the valve.

Post those numbers and we may be able to give you a better ballpark cc.

Thanks for all of the replies. These are the EB ported AFR 220's I have on my solid roller 383 that I getting ready to install when I get my trans back. The intake runner is ~228-230cc. I was just having second thoughts on changing out these heads and possibly going to a set of AFR 227 or AI trick flow 215's. I wish I had the flow numbers for these heads but I was told they were ~305 @.600 lift on the intake. I am not sure of the exhaust numbers.

I was hoping for ~580-600chp after everything was dialed in but I am not sure as the combo made 520chp @6100-7000 (the peak was basically an RPM range) I was told the dyno was conservative but that might get me ~10-15 more hp. The engine was dynoed without my crankcase vaccuum pump, a set of 1.75 2.5" collector headers (I am using stahl 1.875 with 3.5" collector), and a 750 78f 82r jets carb. The timing was at 36 degrees. I am going to run fast XFI on this combo and not carb but I don't think I can expect too much more power from it. If I could get ~15 from the headers and ~10 from the vacuum pump that still puts me at 555chp. I am shooting for 10.5@130mph @3500rw and need ~600chp to get there based on the calcs.

I am bored and stuck inside due to the snow.

Much depends on your cam choice too. On a recent LT1 cylinder head shoot-out done by GM HIGH TECH PERFORMANCE magazine a pair of AFR 195s (and NOT the Competition Ported versions), made HP 516 IIRC at the crank using a XFI 230/236 HR (same cam that I'm running).

Using your math, 10 and 15 equals 25. Add that to the 520 your seeing puts you at 545 HP, and, of course you already know that the engine has to dyno setup exactly the same way as it will be run in the car for those numbers to be reliable. If your car won't have a vacuum pump the runs on the dyno WITH a pump will be skewed.

Engine was a 383 LT1 and was setup identically for each of the pulls. IIRC all the heads in the shoot-out had 55cc chambers. The full shoot-out article is on their website in case you're interested in reading it. From that article you may get an idea of what you'd need to do to meet your goal since you're looking at about 35 more HP than tht engine made.

My view: If your heads are Eliminators you've got the BEST set going; if not going with the new Eliminators would be an improvement. As far as port volume, I'd contact AFR and drill down on that issue. Going too big on a 383 could hurt rather than help. Bigger heads could result in moe top end power at the expense of mid-range= Average numbers is what I concentrate on. I'd let Tony at AFR make that call; he's their guru and has done all the testing.

Since you do have time on your hands, you could take your heads to a reputable shop and have them flowed just so you'll KNOW exactly what you have in order to compare them against what you are considering buying. That's what I'd do.

Hope this helps.

Jake
