head porting cost?
head porting cost?
I've been visiting these boards for quite some time just absorbing all the info I can find, but this is my 1st post. I'm planning on swapping a LT1/T-56 into my 3rd gen so I've been looking into some potential mods. I was considering the LT4 conversion kit, but I've done plenty of searching and have read plenty of posts on this site that recommend going a different route. It seems that a cheaper yet just as effective route would be to have the LT1 heads ported along with getting a Hot Cam or CC305.
How much cheaper is this route? Basically my question is how much does it cost to have LT1 heads ported? I know it varies, but a ball park figure can really help me out. Keep in mind that I live in CA, so I have to pass emissions. I don't know if a port job will effect emissions, but I guess the Hot Cam and CC305 cam be made to pass with proper pcm tuning.

The only reason i'm offering these guys numbers is cause they have done many peoples heads around town and all have serious increasein power. I don't have there heads but people who do are beating me. I will be getting a set redone this summer by one of them but can't hurt to talk to them. Two machanics who know what they are doing to f-bodys. Both have really fast cars. I think Tracey Scott has a high 10 sec and Dave Smith has a fast one too but i can't find his times right now. They have done wonders here in Cincinnati, really good guys

Try this guy. He can port your heads for under $500. He isn't a pro, but seems to really know his stuff. You should check into it.

AhartZ28 (Ryan) does porting. The first set of heads he did layed down 414 RWHP in a 96 Z28 with nothing more than a CC306 Cam, Hooker LT's, 58 MM TB, and a C.A.I.
I just bought his second set of heads today. They were actually mine from my 97 TA that when I blew a head gasket I put on a different set of heads and gave him these. Im taking them to GTP in Houston in March and will be expecting to flow above 275 on the intake and 190 on the exhaust. I will keep the board updated on how they turn out.
Check him out on the local board in Texas here. Great Rep in San antonio and in Texas.

Wow! This site gets replies real fast.
414 hp at the wheels is pretty darn impressive. My goal is somewhere around 330-350 RWHP. From what I've read the LT4 kit along with headers and exhaust can get me there, but if I can get there for less than the ~$2200 price of the LT4 kit then I'm all for it.
I'm fine with paying up to $1K to get the LT1 heads ported. Add to that $500 for the Hot Cam kit and another $100-200 for gaskets and such and total comes to $1600-1700. This could definately save me about $600-700, which I could use towards other mods. I'll be doing all the installations myself so at least I'll be saving big $$$ there. But will this combo help me reach my goal of 330-350 RWHP? Seems like it should...
