head gasket question
head gasket question
i am replacing head gaskets and had the heads resurfaced. i bought the impalla SS head gasket which has a tighter compressed thickness than the f-body gasket. i picked up the heads this morning and they told me that they took .025" off to make them flat.
am i going to have a problem with this set up. the block is stock.
thanks for the info.

You might need shorter pushrods. Another thing is how the intake is going to sit. Not sure if it will make a difference, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.
Since the heads are off, how about some hot cam springs, and some 1.6 rockers? Nows your chance.

That is a lot to take off on one pass. The best way to go is to CC the heads to determine the combustion chamber size. Then that can be calculated into a Dynamic Compression Ratio calculator to see if you'll have issues with an .039 compressed head gasket thickness.
Pushrods may need to be resized as well as the intake manifold port matching. To get the geometry correct, the intake manifold should be machined too.
Are you running stock internals? What cam? Are you running a 160F Thermostat?

I would agree with the other guys on the concern with pushrod length.
I just replaced my head gaskets and got my heads redone as well. I used the standard Fel Pro gasket for the Camaro LT1 and the machine shop only had to take off .008" to make my heads flat. Mine runs like a champ now with the original pushrods.
What's the worst that could happen by having the pushrods too long? You could bend one. They are relatively easy to get to compared to the rest of a head gasket replacement project. Maybe worse things could happen as well if they could somehow damage things below in the long block.
I don't think not machining the intake should be an issue. Yes, the heads will be setting lower now in relation to the intake, but it should seal just fine. Now if for some reason you machined the intake and not the heads or machined too much off the intake, then I could see where there could be an issue.
Just my thoughts.
